Axel's take: 7.2/10

Good for social stays, less convincing for sleep and self-catering. a lively budget hostel in Smithfield, with dorms and private rooms, scored for what it is.

Generator Dublin is a large, design-led budget hostel, not a conventional hotel. It’s a good pick for travelers who want a sociable base rather than somewhere quiet to retreat. Smithfield’s tram stop and the neighboring Jameson Distillery are useful anchors, while the bar, games and events make meeting people easy. Expedia and Trip.com guests regularly praise the location and helpful reception staff; rooms range from shared dorms to private en-suite options.

The trade-offs are substantial: recent Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews repeatedly mention late-night noise, uneven bathroom cleanliness and maintenance issues. Plenty of guests still report clean, comfortable stays, but consistency is the weakness. There’s no guest kitchen, and outside food and drink are restricted. Dorm towels and luggage lockers cost extra. We’d choose it for a short, social city break, but skip it for dependable quiet or a self-catering budget trip.

• Best for: solo travelers seeking a social atmosphere; friends on a short city break; travelers comfortable with hostel basics

• Watch out for: late-night bar and courtyard noise; inconsistent shared-bathroom cleanliness and upkeep; no guest kitchen; outside food restricted

• Location: Smithfield base beside Jameson, close to the Luas; convenient without being in Temple Bar.

• Rooms: Dorms and private rooms, with shared or en-suite bathrooms; basic comfort and noise insulation vary.

• Cleanliness: Many clean-stay reports, but recurring bathroom and communal-area complaints prevent a stronger verdict.

• Service: Reception staff frequently earn praise for friendliness and problem-solving; other service is less consistent.

• Amenities: Bar, café/restaurant, games, events, free Wi-Fi and laundry; no guest cooking facilities.

• Fees and surprises: Budget for breakfast, dorm towels, luggage lockers and laundry; bring a padlock for dorm storage.
