Hotels in DetroitA design-led, upscale 4-star boutique hotel in downtown Detroit
8.7/10
Distinctive Detroit style and excellent downtown access, but street noise can spoil the stay.
Shinola is an upscale 4-star boutique hotel whose distinctive interiors and downtown location make it a strong pick for a Detroit weekend. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise the cleanliness, comfortable rooms and welcoming staff, while Tripadvisor feedback reinforces the appeal of its design, restaurants and bars. We'd choose it for a couples' getaway or a sports-and-dining trip where the hotel feels part of the experience, rather than simply somewhere to sleep.
The biggest reservation is nighttime street noise, particularly in Woodward-facing rooms; multiple guests describe revving engines and loud music disrupting sleep. Request a room away from Woodward, without assuming silence is guaranteed. Service is usually praised, but recent accounts of billing disputes and uneven front-desk attention temper the luxury promise. Factor in the destination amenity fee and paid valet, and confirm breakfast inclusions. Light sleepers should look elsewhere.

Best for: Design-minded couples; Downtown dining weekends; Sports and concert trips
Watch out for: Disruptive street noise in Woodward-facing rooms; Destination amenity fee and paid valet; Occasional billing and front-desk inconsistencies
Location: Central, walkable downtown base near restaurants, shopping and major sports venues.
Rooms: Distinctive, comfortable interiors; street-facing sound insulation is the main weakness.
Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent guest feedback, with strong booking-site cleanliness ratings.
Service: Mostly warm and attentive, though some recent guests report poor follow-through on problems.
Amenities: San Morello, several bars, a 24-hour gym with Peloton bikes and bicycle borrowing.
Fees and surprises: Destination amenity fee, valet and dog fees; the hotel advertises breakfast for two, but confirm eligible items.
