Lovely for a slower getaway, inefficient for a packed Washington itinerary. Good hotels and relaxed historic streets cannot offset the weakest sightseeing access, especially when waterfront stays add another connection to Metro.

Old Town delivers the historic atmosphere that practical Virginia bases lack: brick sidewalks, independent shops along King Street and a waterfront made for a leisurely evening. Small museums, galleries and restaurants can comfortably fill time without entering Washington at all. Choose it for a couples' getaway or a slower return visit with Alexandria genuinely on the agenda.

The catch is that the waterfront and King Street–Old Town Metro sit at opposite ends of a mile-long shopping street. The trolley helps, but it adds another step to daily DC outings. For consecutive museum days and late returns from Washington, this is the wrong trade; stay closer and visit Old Town instead.
