Axel's take on Capitol Hill & Union Station: #6 of 12 in Washington, DC, 7.2/10
Stay for congressional landmarks and residential streets, but check the exact address. Useful access, reasonable value and historic character earn sixth, but fewer doorstep attractions and differing station locations make the exact address important.
Capitol Hill rewards visitors who want the Capitol, Library of Congress and historic residential streets to shape their stay. Around Eastern Market and Barracks Row, the appeal is neighborhood shopping and dinner rather than office towers. Union Station serves a different purpose: convenient rail arrivals and access to the northern side of the Capitol grounds.
Do not assume a Union Station address puts Eastern Market's restaurants outside your door. The station side and the residential Hill offer different evenings and different Metro lines. Stay here for architecture, congressional history and calmer residential blocks; skip it if your priority is the western memorials or a concentrated late-night scene.
- Best for: museums and culture, a quiet stay
- Skip it if: You want western memorials close by; You expect Eastern Market beside Union Station
- Getting around: Union Station has Red; Capitol South/Eastern Market have Blue/Orange/Silver, direct to DCA/IAD respectively; BWI uses MARC/Amtrak plus a terminal shuttle; congressional sights are walkable.
- After dark: Eastern Market and Barracks Row have dinner-and-bar activity; residential streets settle earlier, and Union Station is not the same evening destination.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $219 a night · usually 7% under the public rate
