Axel's take on Surry Hills: #4 of 11 in Sydney, 7.5/10
The strongest neighbourhood stay for restaurants, bars and local routines. Restaurants, pubs and neighbourhood character outweigh its less immediate sightseeing access, while hotel choice and value are middling.
Surry Hills is for travellers who want a neighbourhood around their sightseeing. Crown Street and the surrounding terrace streets bring cafés, independent shops, restaurants and pubs into everyday walking distance. There is theatre at Belvoir, and Oxford Street’s LGBTQ nightlife lies along the northern edge. It makes an especially good return-visit base when dinner matters as much as the daytime itinerary.
You give up immediate harbour access, and hills, traffic and pub noise vary by street. Central is convenient from the western side, less so as you head uphill. Stay for food, evenings out or Moore Park events; skip it if your ideal Sydney morning starts with a beach swim.
- Best for: food lovers, nightlife, sports fans, LGBTQ+ travelers
- Skip it if: You want a beach outside your door; You need reliably quiet surroundings
- Getting around: Central serves the western streets; L2/L3 stop at Surry Hills and continue to Moore Park. SYD: direct T8 to Central, then walk. WSI: St Marys bus/train, then local transport.
- After dark: Pubs, wine bars and restaurants make evenings a strength; avoid a room directly over a busy venue if noise matters.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $267 a night · usually 6% under the public rate
