Axel's take on Anhembi & Tiete: #10 of 10 in Sao Paulo, 4.5/10
A specialist event and transport base, not a general São Paulo recommendation. Below-average accommodation costs help, but modest hotels, sparse doorstep options and limited general sightseeing convenience leave Anhembi best reserved for specific events.
Anhembi is an event base rather than an alternative to staying around Paulista. Avenida Olavo Fontoura leads to Distrito Anhembi and the Sambódromo, while Portuguesa–Tietê serves the intercity bus terminal. Northern sporting venues, including Canindé, can also make this side of the city relevant. Choose it when an event, match or bus departure genuinely dictates your schedule.
The distances between venues, accommodation and the station matter more than the names suggest. Exhibition access can still require a substantial walk or a short ride, and this is not an inviting base for aimless evening exploration. For a normal holiday, accept the journey to your event and sleep somewhere more rewarding.
- Best for: business trips and conventions, sports fans
- Skip it if: You have no northern event or early bus; You want restaurants and sights on foot
- Getting around: Line 1 serves Portuguesa–Tietê, but Anhembi's exhibition pavilion is about 1.5 km from the station. GRU: express to Luz, then Line 1 and possibly a final ride; CGH: taxi is simplest; VCP: coach or road transfer.
- After dark: Plan around venue crowds rather than continuous neighborhood street life, and arrange a ride back after evening events.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $86 a night · usually 13% under the public rate

Where to look in Anhembi & Tiete
- Olavo Fontoura at Milton Rodrigues. Choose this junction for Anhembi events; check your entrance rather than assuming the metro is immediately beside the venue. Hotels here: Holiday Inn Sao Paulo Parque Anhembi by IHG.
- Portuguesa-Tietê station. Start here for bus connections and metro access, with onward transport to exhibition venues rather than leisurely neighborhood wandering. Hotels here: Golden Tower Express Anhembi by Fênix Hotéis, HLN Hotel - Expo - Anhembi.
- Avenida Zaki Narchi. Favor this side for Center Norte plans; visitors describe limited appeal for aimless walks beyond the event and shopping destinations. Hotels here: Novotel Sao Paulo Center Norte.
How to choose
- Choose Holiday Inn Sao Paulo Parque Anhembi by IHG if Anhembi event access matters most and you want comfortable rooms, not a guaranteed working pool.
- Choose Golden Tower Express Anhembi by Fênix Hotéis if you're connecting through Tietê and want practical transport access without paying for larger event-hotel rooms.
- Choose Novotel Sao Paulo Center Norte if Expo Center Norte is your destination and your family needs spacious rooms rather than a swimming pool.
What paying more buys
Holiday Inn Parque Anhembi buys room space and convenience for Anhembi events over cheaper Golden Tower Express Anhembi's compact transit-focused rooms. Novotel Center Norte puts spacious accommodation near Expo Center Norte instead, but no longer has a pool. For a single night between buses, the larger hotels' extra space and event positioning are unlikely to justify the premium. Typical rates with Axel here run from $49 a night at HLN Hotel - Expo - Anhembi to $121 at Novotel Sao Paulo Center Norte (last 30 days).
