Axel's take on Paseo Colón & La Sabana: #4 of 8 in San Jose, Costa Rica, 6.8/10
Choose the park for breathing room, families and stadium visits. La Sabana has the strongest hotel offering and useful city access, but fewer doorstep options and weaker value than the central barrios.
Paseo Colón links the commercial city to La Sabana’s open space. Near the park, the appeal is straightforward: room for daytime exercise, the Costa Rican Museum of Art and access to the National Stadium. It is our most balanced choice for families who want city access without sleeping amid downtown’s shopping streets.
The trade-off is a less cohesive evening neighborhood, with larger roads separating useful pockets. Prefer a street with restaurants you will actually use rather than relying on the broad La Sabana label. Construction began at BLVD Sabana in May 2026, so ask specifically about nearby building work before choosing a room.
- Best for: families, sports fans
- Skip it if: You want a concentrated restaurant-and-bar district; You dislike major-road crossings
- Getting around: Sabana–Estadio and Sabana–Cementerio buses connect with downtown; Sabana Sur also has weekday trains at Contraloría. Walk locally, but use road transfers from SJO or SYQ rather than expecting airport rail.
- After dark: Favor restaurant streets and arranged rides for late returns; do not make a cross-park shortcut your evening transport plan.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $115 a night · usually 9% under the public rate

Cheaper Barceló San José already supplies gardens and outdoor pools, though transport is needed for sightseeing. Pay Hilton’s premium for modern comfort and stadium access, not simply for somewhere to swim. Typical rates with Axel here run from $87 a night at Costa Rica Tennis Club & Hotel to $180 at Hilton San Jose La Sabana (last 30 days).
