Axel's take on Airport & Grand Sierra: #4 of 7 in Reno, 5.2/10
Choose flight convenience or indoor entertainment, not a walkable Reno neighborhood. Solid hotels and practical airport or entertainment access help, but few nearby street-level attractions make this a less rewarding base for exploring Reno.
This side of Reno offers two different stays: practical airport access around Terminal Way, and an entertainment-focused campus off East Second Street. The latter supplies bowling, arcade games, shows and nightlife without requiring a separate outing. It can work well for families or concertgoers whose main plans are already on site.
The surrounding road layout is the compromise: airport proximity does not mean every address is an easy terminal walk, and downtown is a separate trip. Construction also matters, with airport access changes and relocated bus stops. Do not count the new basketball arena as an existing attraction; the university's announced move is for 2027–28.
- Best for: families, luxury travelers
- Skip it if: You want restaurants and museums on neighborhood streets; You plan to explore mainly on foot
- Getting around: Route 12 serves Terminal Way and East Second Street; use a taxi or confirmed shuttle from RNO. October 2026 construction has moved several airport-side and resort-campus stops, so check the current stop notices rather than relying only on the route map.
- After dark: Shows and nightclub nights keep the entertainment campus active; the airport strip is primarily an arrival-and-departure base, not a strolling district.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $164 a night · usually 7% under the public rate

Where to look in Airport & Grand Sierra
- Terminal Way at East Plumb. Choose this airport-facing corner for flight logistics; follow marked pedestrian access rather than assuming a direct terminal crossing. Hotels here: Aloft by Marriott Reno-Tahoe International Airport, Hyatt Place Reno Tahoe Airport, SureStay Plus Hotel by Best Western Reno Airport.
- East Plumb toward Market Street. Use the western airport approach for a practical overnight; wider Reno sightseeing still needs transport. Hotels here: Holiday Inn Express And Suites - Reno Airport, Comfort Inn & Suites Airport, Days Inn by Wyndham Reno Hotel.
- East Second Street at I-580. Choose this road-access setting when your plans center on the entertainment campus, not a neighborhood walking circuit. Hotels here: Grand Sierra Resort and Casino.
How to choose
- Choose Holiday Inn Express And Suites - Reno Airport if you want consistently clean rooms, included hot breakfast and an indoor pool; check shuttle hours.
- Choose Aloft by Marriott Reno-Tahoe International Airport if modern rooms and airport proximity matter most; budget for parking and breakfast and arrange the shuttle.
- Choose Grand Sierra Resort and Casino if concerts, bowling and resort activities are the trip, accepting construction and casino-hotel noise.
What paying more buys
Compared with cheaper SureStay Plus, Aloft buys more modern rooms, while Holiday Inn Express adds included hot breakfast and a heated indoor pool. Neither guarantees quieter nights or fewer parking charges. The premium is less compelling for a brief airport sleep if SureStay's worn furnishings do not bother you. Typical rates with Axel here run from $84 a night at Grand Sierra Resort and Casino to $201 at Holiday Inn Express And Suites - Reno Airport (last 30 days).
