Axel's take on Tigard & Washington Square: #6 of 6 in Portland, Oregon, 3.9/10
Choose it for shopping or local commitments, not a Portland introduction. Reasonable hotels and suburban shopping cannot offset the weakest sightseeing access, fragmented walking routes and limited neighborhood character.
Washington Square is the reason to choose this part of the southwest suburbs: major retailers, sit-down restaurants and westside errands. Downtown Tigard’s Main Street and Fanno Creek Trail offer a different, smaller-town outing, but they are not the same walkable district as the mall. Stay here for a local commitment or shopping-focused visit, not immersion in Portland.
For ordinary sightseeing, the logistics are the weakness. Wide roads separate destinations, and there is no MAX station at Washington Square. WES is a weekday rush-hour service, not an all-day sightseeing train. Without a car, Beaverton or central Portland makes a better base.
- Best for: shopping, a quiet stay
- Skip it if: You are visiting Portland mainly for sightseeing; You want a straightforward car-free stay
- Getting around: Washington Square has buses including 76/78, while downtown Tigard has bus 12 to Portland and weekday rush-hour WES; from PDX, take Red MAX to Beaverton and transfer to a bus, or use a car.
- After dark: Expect mall-and-restaurant evenings that wind down rather than a nightlife district; quieter social activity does not necessarily mean quiet rooms beside major roads.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $154 a night
