Axel's take on Lloyd District & Convention Center: #3 of 6 in Portland, Oregon, 6.5/10
An event-first base with useful trains, not Portland’s most engaging streets. Useful rail connections and good hotels earn third place, but limited doorstep attractions and weak value make it more practical than atmospheric.
Stay in Lloyd if your trip revolves around the Oregon Convention Center, a Blazers game or a Rose Quarter concert. NE Holladay’s light rail and the streetcars on MLK and Grand make this practical without a car, even when plans cross the river. Broadway supplies more neighborhood dining than the big event blocks.
It is less convincing for a leisurely Portland weekend: wide roads and large buildings interrupt the walking experience, and evenings depend heavily on the event calendar. Lloyd Center mall closed on August 8, 2026. Older recommendations built around mall shopping or ice skating no longer apply; choose Lloyd for your event and transit connections instead.
- Best for: business trips and conventions, sports fans, travelers on a budget
- Skip it if: You want neighborhood cafés and browsing on every block; You are choosing it for Lloyd Center mall
- Getting around: Blue/Green/Red MAX runs along NE Holladay, Yellow stops at Interstate/Rose Quarter, and A/B streetcars use MLK/Grand; walk to conventions and arenas, with direct Red Line service from PDX.
- After dark: Expect crowds around games and concerts, then noticeably quieter stretches between venues; local visitor advice describes limited evening dining immediately around the event blocks.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $191 a night · usually 7% under the public rate
