Axel's take on Pearl District & Old Town: #2 of 6 in Portland, Oregon, 7.9/10
Choose the Pearl for an easy weekend, Old Town for nightlife. Excellent transport, the strongest hotel scores and distinctive streets put it second, but doorstep choice trails Downtown and Old Town requires careful block selection.
These adjoining neighborhoods make different stays. Around NW 10th–13th avenues, the Pearl mixes converted warehouses, galleries, Powell’s and small parks. Farther east, Old Town adds Lan Su Chinese Garden, historic storefronts, queer nightlife and music venues. Both put plenty within walking distance.
Our pick is the Pearl side for relaxed dinners and a first visit. Recent local discussions favor it over Old Town and flag drug use and disruptive street activity in Old Town, although some residents also report improvements. Choose your block rather than treating the neighborhoods as interchangeable; light sleepers should also avoid rooms facing late-night venues.
- Best for: couples, nightlife, food lovers, LGBTQ+ travelers
- Skip it if: You need a consistently quiet late-night walk; You want effortless parking
- Getting around: NS and A/B streetcars serve the Pearl; Blue/Red MAX serves Old Town/Chinatown, with direct Red Line trains from PDX and an additional walk or streetcar ride for western Pearl addresses.
- After dark: Pearl restaurants and theater support a dinner-focused evening; Old Town has louder clubs and drag venues, alongside the street concerns reported by residents.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $170 a night
