Axel's take on Universal Orlando Resort: #1 of 12 in Orlando, 7.5/10
Stay here for Universal days without the daily transport puzzle. Distinctive resort surroundings, strong hotels and straightforward Universal transport take first place, despite middling value and weaker convenience for Disney or local Orlando.
Universal’s original resort feels like a self-contained holiday campus: landscaped paths, waterways, pools and CityWalk’s restaurants connect the experience. Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure sit together beyond CityWalk, making this one of Orlando’s easiest places to organize repeated park days and afternoon breaks.
Choose your transport connection carefully: walking paths and boats serve some properties, while others depend on buses. Epic Universe is on a separate campus and requires a bus or road journey from here. Stay here if Universal dominates your itinerary; skip it if you want neighborhood restaurants, quiet evenings or equally convenient access to Disney.
- Best for: families, travelers without a car, first-time visitors
- Skip it if: Most park days are at Disney; You want independent neighborhood life
- Getting around: Property-dependent paths, boats and resort buses connect the parks; LYNX 37/38 serve Universal; use a booked transfer or rideshare from MCO, and road transport from SFB.
- After dark: CityWalk supplies the evening activity; expect restaurant crowds and park-closing surges rather than a quiet village atmosphere.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $181 a night

Where to look in Universal Orlando Resort
- Adventure Way. Start here for landscaped resort surroundings and park-focused days rather than independent neighborhood dining. Hotels here: Universal Aventura Hotel, Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort.
- Hollywood Way Garden Walk. Choose the Garden Walk side for shaded walks toward CityWalk; useful when evening restaurants matter as much as rides. Hotels here: Loews Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando.

Hotels here: Hyatt Place across from Universal Orlando Resort, DoubleTree by Hilton at the Entrance to Universal Orlando, La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Orlando Universal area.
How to choose
- Choose Universal Aventura Hotel if you prefer understated design, helpful staff and a rooftop bar to elaborate resort theming.
- Choose Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando if you'll use Express Unlimited at the original parks and want spacious rooms between visits.
- Choose Clarion Inn & Suites Across From Universal Orlando Resort if you want one of the cheapest bases here and accept basic rooms, noise and limited shuttles.
What paying more buys
Compared with cheaper Clarion Inn & Suites, Aventura buys modern interiors and a rooftop bar, but compact rooms remain. The much pricier Portofino Bay adds spacious rooms, three pools and Express Unlimited for the original parks. That premium is harder to justify for Epic Universe-focused trips or travelers who won't use the pools. Typical rates with Axel here run from $109 a night at Clarion Inn & Suites Across From Universal Orlando Resort to $820 at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando (last 30 days).
