Axel's take on Piazza Garibaldi & Central Station: #7 of 7 in Naples, 6.8/10
Excellent for trains; a conditional choice for the Naples you came to see. The strongest value and useful rail connections cannot fully offset weaker neighborhood character, fewer nearby sights and less compelling hotels.
Stay here when your itinerary genuinely revolves around Napoli Centrale: an early departure, repeated regional trips or several nights interrupted by trains elsewhere. Metro Lines 1 and 2 and the Circumvesuviana make the transport case unusually strong. You are choosing convenience at a major interchange, however, rather than the lanes, shopping streets or waterfront that define most visitors’ Naples.
Recent travelers give mixed accounts of the surrounding streets, and local forum advice repeatedly favors other neighborhoods for a full city break. Traffic, luggage handling and your exact route back matter more here than a broad reputation. We would choose it for a specific logistical reason, not simply because the station looks central on a map.
- Best for: travelers on a budget, business trips and conventions, sports fans
- Skip it if: You are choosing a romantic city-break setting; You have no particular need for frequent trains
- Getting around: Centrale/Garibaldi combines national trains, Lines 1/2 and Circumvesuviana routes toward Pompeii and Sorrento; NAP normally has direct Alibus service; QSR means Airlink to Salerno and a train to Centrale; the historic core is west on foot or by metro.
- After dark: Visitor reports are mixed: some felt comfortable, others disliked the station-side walk after dark; check the precise entrance and plan a direct route with luggage.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $114 a night
Where to stay in Naples: every neighborhood ranked
Where to look in Piazza Garibaldi & Central Station
- Piazza Garibaldi, station frontage. Choose the square for straightforward rail and metro connections, not a leisurely neighborhood retreat. Hotels here: UNA Hotels Napoli, Ideal City Walk, Hotel Nuovo Rebecchino.
- Corso Meridionale. The station’s northern flank suits short rail stopovers; prioritize your exact entrance and luggage route over evening strolling. Hotels here: il Divino, Grand Hotel Europa, Stelle Hotel The Businest.
- Via Giuseppe Pica. Look just south of the square for train-based day trips, accepting the busy station district rather than old-town atmosphere. Hotels here: ibis Styles Napoli Garibaldi, Hotel Vergilius Billia.
How to choose
- Choose il Divino if modern, spotless rooms and helpful hosts matter more than continuous reception or an on-site breakfast.
- Choose UNA Hotels Napoli if you want a comfortable station hotel with rooftop dining and will pay substantially more for it.
- Choose Stelle Hotel The Businest if direct station access is your priority for an early train, despite variable cooling and basic breakfast.
What paying more buys
Grand Hotel Europa is cheaper than most here and covers station-stopover basics with welcoming staff. UNA Hotels Napoli’s substantial premium brings generally well-kept rooms and a rooftop restaurant and terrace, but not an escape from hectic streets or possible traffic noise. For an early departure with no time for rooftop dining, the extra is difficult to justify. Typical rates with Axel here run from $76 a night at Hotel Nuovo Rebecchino to $252 at UNA Hotels Napoli (last 30 days).
