Axel's take on Porta Nuova & Isola: #6 of 11 in Milan, 7.9/10
Choose Isola's streets for local evenings, Porta Nuova for modern Milan. Good hotels, useful rail connections and Isola's neighborhood streets create a balanced base, though value and doorstep cultural sights are less compelling.
This is two complementary versions of Milan: the towers and open spaces around Piazza Gae Aulenti, and the lower-rise streets of Isola around Via Borsieri and Via Thaon de Revel. Stay toward Isola for neighborhood bakeries, independent shops and aperitivo; choose Porta Nuova for the skyline and proximity to contemporary offices.
Garibaldi makes the district unusually practical for rail-connected trips, and Brera is a natural walking extension. The trade-off is that a tower-side address does not deliver the same experience as an Isola side street. For a very short, monument-led first visit, we would still favor Brera, Magenta or Duomo.
- Best for: food lovers, business trips and conventions
- Skip it if: You want historic streets immediately outside; You assume every address has Isola's atmosphere
- Getting around: Garibaldi M2/M5 and rail, Isola M5 and Gioia M2; walk toward Brera and Corso Como. MXP: direct trains at Garibaldi; LIN: M4–M2 at Sant'Ambrogio; BGY: coach to Centrale, then M2.
- After dark: Via Borsieri draws the after-work crowd; nearby Corso Como offers a more explicitly nightlife-focused evening.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $251 a night · usually 5% under the public rate

At the pricier end, Principe di Savoia adds grand-hotel service and an indoor pool, but closes January 1, 2027, with reopening expected in 2029.
