Axel's take on Old Town: #1 of 7 in Krakow, 9.1/10
The best first-visit base, but choose your street carefully. Old Town leads for historic character, effortless sightseeing and excellent hotels, but value is weak and busy nightlife streets demand careful room selection.
Stay here for Kraków’s classic streets: Rynek Główny, St Mary’s Basilica, the Cloth Hall and the walk down Grodzka toward Wawel. The Planty provides a leafy alternative to the shopping streets, and the compact layout makes short sightseeing breaks unusually easy. This is our default for a first visit.
The compromise is living inside the visitor economy. Busy terraces, tour groups and late bars can overwhelm the atmosphere around the square. Choose a side street or courtyard-facing room rather than assuming every historic address is peaceful. Skip it if residential evenings matter more than having the monuments immediately outside.
- Best for: first-time visitors, museums and culture, luxury travelers, travelers without a car
- Skip it if: You want a residential atmosphere; You need reliably quiet nights
- Getting around: Walk most sights; tram 12 serves Poczta Główna. From KRK, take SKA1 to Kraków Główny, then walk roughly 15–20 minutes toward Rynek; Wawel tram stop is closed in October 2026.
- After dark: Restaurants and bars keep the main streets busy late; rooms facing nightlife streets are a poor choice for early nights.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $139 a night · usually 8% under the public rate
Where to stay in Krakow: every neighborhood ranked
Where to look in Old Town
- Rynek Główny, Sławkowska corner. Stay here for sightseeing on your doorstep and lively restaurant evenings; light sleepers should avoid square-facing rooms. Hotels here: Hotel Saski Krakow, Curio Collection by Hilton, Betmanowska Main Square Residence Adults Only.
- Planty, Świętego Tomasza edge. A leafy walking route beside the historic streets, useful for sightseers who also want easy station access. Hotels here: Campanile PRIME Krakow Old Town, Wyspianski Hotel.
- Plac Na Groblach. Choose the Wawel end for castle visits and river walks rather than evenings directly around the Main Square. Hotels here: Hotel Pod Wawelem, Radisson Blu Hotel, Krakow.
How to choose
- Choose Hotel Saski Krakow, Curio Collection by Hilton if you want attentive service, a pool and spa just off the Main Square.
- Choose W Sercu Krakowa Aparthotel if you want a kitchenette and a quieter setting for a longer stay.
- Choose Wyspianski Hotel if you want one of the cheapest bases here; book Premium if air conditioning matters.
What paying more buys
Wyspianski Hotel buys the location cheaply, but Classic rooms lack cooling. Hotel Saski costs considerably more for consistently strong service, an indoor pool and spa; W Sercu Krakowa instead offers kitchenettes at a mid-priced rate for the neighborhood. Saski's premium is harder to justify if you'll spend every day out and won't use the wellness facilities. Typical rates with Axel here run from $91 a night at Wyspianski Hotel to $251 at Hotel Saski Krakow, Curio Collection by Hilton (last 30 days).
