Axel's take on Hung Hom: #10 of 10 in Hong Kong, 5.8/10
A practical waterfront alternative for events and calmer evenings, not the obvious first stay. Useful rail connections and waterfront walks help, but weaker hotels, limited nearby sightseeing and modest value leave it last overall.
Hung Hom suits travellers who would rather finish the day on a promenade than in a shopping crowd. The waterfront towards Whampoa offers harbour walks, while inland streets provide everyday restaurants. The Hong Kong Coliseum is beside Hung Hom station, and the Tuen Ma Line also makes journeys towards Kai Tak Sports Park straightforward.
The limitation is not isolation but the need to travel for much of a classic sightseeing itinerary. Hung Hom station, Whampoa station and waterfront addresses are not interchangeable, so the actual walk matters. Choose it for an event-led trip or an unhurried return visit; first-timers wanting constant discoveries outside the door will usually prefer Tsim Sha Tsui or Wan Chai.
- Best for: a quiet stay, sports fans
- Skip it if: You want major sights immediately outside; You want to walk home from nightlife
- Getting around: East Rail/Tuen Ma at Hung Hom, Kwun Tong at Whampoa; promenade walkable; HKG by A21 to Hung Hom station or A25 towards Whampoa.
- After dark: Waterfront walks and dinner are the main draw; plan to travel elsewhere for an extensive bar crawl.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $254 a night · usually 6% under the public rate

How to choose
- Choose Harbour Grand Kowloon if you want room space, waterfront walks and a quieter neighborhood more than consistently polished five-star service.
- Choose Harbour Plaza Metropolis if Coliseum concerts and Hung Hom MTR access lead your plans, and you can accept dated fittings.
- Choose Kowloon Harbourfront Hotel if separate bedrooms and generous family living space matter more than fresh interiors or softer beds.
What paying more buys
Cheaper Harbour Plaza Metropolis favors station and Coliseum access, with compact standard rooms. Harbour Grand Kowloon buys more room space and a residential waterfront setting; slightly pricier Kowloon Harbourfront buys two-bedroom suites rather than polished interiors. Neither upgrade is worthwhile for a short concert stay where a quick station walk matters most. The best hotels in Hung Hom, ranked by Axel's take
Each hotel scored for what it is by Axel's own review; the rate is one stay Axel priced this week, beside the public rate for the same dates.
- Harbour Grand Kowloon 8.0/10, large five-star waterfront hotel in residential Whampoa. A strong waterfront pick for space and views, less convincing for seamless luxury. Why it's here: spacious waterfront rooms and quieter Whampoa surroundings for families and couples. Accept: uneven luxury service and distance from Tsim Sha Tsui's action.
- Harbour Plaza Metropolis 7.8/10, large, traditional 4-star beside Hung Hom station. A practical Hung Hom base with harbour views, but some dated edges. Why it's here: cheaper station-and-Coliseum convenience with a harbour-facing outdoor pool. Accept: compact standard rooms, dated fittings and occasional air-conditioning noise.
- Kowloon Harbourfront Hotel 7.4/10, practical 4-star apartment-style hotel on the Hung Hom waterfront. Choose it for family-sized suites and harbour views, not polished four-star interiors. Why it's here: two-bedroom suites and generous living space for families and small groups. Accept: dated furnishings, very firm beds and uncertain facility availability.
