Axel's take on Zona 9 & Zona 4: #3 of 5 in Guatemala City, 6.2/10
Choose Cuatro Grados Norte for street life; Zona 9 is more businesslike. The strongest transport access and Cuatro Grados Norte's character take third, but weaker value, fewer strong hotels and uneven doorstep convenience hold it back.
These adjoining districts offer two different stays. Zona 4's Cuatro Grados Norte is the choice for cafés, galleries and contemporary city life, with pedestrian-friendly streets around its rutas and vías. It also has established LGBTQ nightlife. Zona 9, farther south, is more about offices and practical connections than the same café-and-bar atmosphere.
The exact address matters. Favor Cuatro Grados Norte if you want to step out for food; choose Zona 9 when meetings dictate the location. AeroMetro construction around Montúfar and Plaza España has complicated road access during 2026, so check pickup directions. Skip this pairing if you expect every street to feel equally walkable.
- Best for: food lovers, nightlife, travelers without a car, LGBTQ+ travelers
- Skip it if: You need a reliably quiet room; You expect Zona 9 to feel like Cuatro Grados Norte
- Getting around: Walk locally in Cuatro Grados Norte; Transmetro Line 13 serves Exposición, Plaza de la República and Zona 9's sixth/seventh avenues; take a taxi, Uber or shuttle from GUA.
- After dark: Cuatro Grados Norte has bars and music venues; treat evenings in Zona 9 as separate outings rather than assuming one continuous nightlife district.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $127 a night · usually 7% under the public rate

Where to look in Zona 9 & Zona 4
- Vía 5 near Ruta 3. Start around the pedestrian café streets for specialty coffee and contemporary neighborhood life; best for stepping out between outings. Hotels here: Conquistador Hotel and Conference Center.
- Avenida Reforma, 3–7 Calle. Favor the boulevard’s northern business stretch when appointments matter more than Cuatro Grados Norte’s café scene. Hotels here: Hotel Residencia Del Sol, Hotel San Carlos.
- Plaza España. Use the fountain square as a landmark for southern Zona 9 stays, separate from Zona 4’s pedestrian café pocket. Hotels here: Hotel Mayestic.
How to choose
- Choose Hotel Residencia Del Sol if room space and a lower rate matter most; confirm air-conditioning and expect some aircraft noise.
- Choose Hotel San Carlos if you prefer an independent hotel with a garden courtyard or need a kitchen-equipped suite.
- Choose Conquistador Hotel and Conference Center if Zona 4 restaurants or a conference dictate your location and you want a pool and gym.
What paying more buys
Hotel Residencia Del Sol offers generous rooms for less than Conquistador, where the extra buys Zona 4 access, a pool, gym and conference facilities—not fresher bathrooms. Hotel San Carlos is another cheaper option with a garden and small pool. Skip the premium if your appointments are in Zona 9 and you will barely use the facilities. Typical rates with Axel here run from $107 a night at Hotel Residencia Del Sol to $1,406 at Hotel Mayestic (last 30 days).
