#9 of 9 hotels in Altoona & Prairie Meadows by Axel's take. Altoona & Prairie Meadows is #3 of 5 places to stay in Des Moines. The best hotels in Altoona & Prairie Meadows, ranked · Where to stay in Des Moines

Axel's take: 5.1/10

Convenient for Adventureland, but inconsistent cleaning and worn facilities make it hard to recommend. a no-frills 2-star motel near Adventureland and I-80, scored for what it is.

This is a no-frills 2-star motel in Altoona, not central Des Moines, with easy access to Adventureland, Prairie Meadows and I-80. Free parking and pet-friendly rooms are useful, and some Expedia guests report clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff. Still, we'd treat it as a fallback rather than a dependable budget pick: Expedia's overall rating is middling, while Booking.com and Tripadvisor are distinctly weaker.

The problem isn't a lack of luxury; it's unreliable basics. Recent Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly describe dirty rooms or bedding, neglected surroundings and maintenance faults. Motel 6 still advertises an indoor pool, but multiple 2026 guests report it unavailable, so don't book around swimming. Expedia also lists a damage deposit. We'd skip it for a family vacation or whenever consistent cleanliness matters more than proximity.

  • Best for: budget drivers needing an Altoona stopover; pet owners willing to accept uneven standards

  • Watch out for: recurring cleaning and maintenance complaints; advertised indoor pool reported unavailable; damage deposit required

  • Location: Near Adventureland, Prairie Meadows and I-80; better for Altoona attractions than a downtown stay.

  • Rooms: Basic air-conditioned rooms; recent guests report broken fixtures and uneven upkeep alongside some comfortable stays.

  • Cleanliness: Unreliable: positive reports coexist with repeated recent complaints about dirty bedding, debris and dead bugs.

  • Service: Helpful staff receive praise, but communication and complaint handling draw mixed feedback.

  • Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, parking and guest laundry; no breakfast, and recent guests report the advertised indoor pool unavailable.

  • Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a damage deposit, free parking and pets staying free, subject to restrictions.
