Axel's take: 8.2/10

A dependable downtown base, strongest on staff and skywalk convenience. a full-service mid-range downtown convention hotel, scored for what it is.

Des Moines Marriott Downtown is a full-service, mid-range convention hotel, and a strong pick for downtown meetings or events. Its direct skywalk connection makes getting around easier in bad weather. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff and clean, comfortable rooms; recent Expedia reviews are particularly positive about the bellmen and shuttle drivers. The indoor pool and well-regarded gym round out a practical stay.

The trade-offs are mostly comfort preferences and extras: some guests find the beds too firm, valet parking draws recurring cost complaints, and Tripadvisor reviewers are lukewarm about restaurant value. Breakfast generally costs extra, and complimentary in-room Wi-Fi requires qualifying direct booking as a Bonvoy member. We'd choose it for convenience and friendly service, but skip it for boutique character or an extras-included stay.

  • Best for: downtown business travelers; conference and event attendees; travelers who appreciate indoor skywalk access

  • Watch out for: costly valet parking; firm beds for some sleepers; breakfast and Wi-Fi conditions

  • Location: Central downtown address with direct skywalk access and convenient access to the Iowa Events Center.

  • Rooms: Generally comfortable and well maintained; some guests find the mattresses too firm.

  • Cleanliness: A consistent strength across sites, reinforced by numerous positive 2026 Expedia reviews.

  • Service: Friendly staff earn repeated praise, especially bellmen and shuttle drivers.

  • Amenities: Indoor pool, fitness center, two restaurants and scheduled airport shuttle; confirm shuttle timing.

  • Fees and surprises: Valet and breakfast cost extra; free in-room Wi-Fi is offered to Bonvoy members booking direct.
