Axel's take: 7.4/10

A convenient downtown base whose helpful staff outshine its aging rooms. a practical 3-star downtown hotel in the historic Liberty Building, scored for what it is.

Hyatt Place Des Moines/Downtown is a practical 3-star with spacious rooms, sofa beds and a location that makes downtown trips easy. We'd consider it for a short business or event stay, especially if skywalk access matters more than fresh interiors. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, breakfast and walkability. Included breakfast, an indoor pool and a 24-hour gym round out the basics.

The drawback is condition rather than space. Reviews through 2026 repeatedly describe worn furniture and dated bathrooms; some also report maintenance and housekeeping misses, although many recent Expedia guests found their rooms clean and comfortable. Parking costs extra and is across the street, with limited arrival space outside. It's a workable downtown choice, but we'd skip it if updated rooms and consistently polished upkeep are priorities.

  • Best for: downtown business trips; concert and event visitors; families wanting extra room space

  • Watch out for: dated rooms and worn furnishings; uneven maintenance and housekeeping; paid parking across the street

  • Location: Central downtown setting with skywalk access and walkable dining and event venues.

  • Rooms: Generously sized with sofa beds, but recurring reports of tired furniture and bathrooms.

  • Cleanliness: Many recent guests report clean rooms, though housekeeping misses recur in other reviews.

  • Service: Friendly, accommodating staff are a consistent strength across Expedia and Tripadvisor.

  • Amenities: Free breakfast and Wi-Fi, an indoor pool and a 24-hour fitness center.

  • Fees and surprises: Parking and dog stays carry extra charges; garage availability can be limited.
