#2 of 9 hotels in Downtown & Court Avenue by Axel's take. Downtown & Court Avenue is #1 of 5 places to stay in Des Moines. The best hotels in Downtown & Court Avenue, ranked · Where to stay in Des Moines

Axel's take: 9.1/10

Des Lux delivers downtown character, generous rooms and unusually consistent hospitality. a historic downtown boutique hotel with spacious rooms and a wellness area, scored for what it is.

Des Lux is a historic downtown boutique hotel that delivers more personality and comfort than a typical mid-range stay. We'd put it high on the list for a Des Moines weekend: recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise spacious, clean rooms, comfortable beds and genuinely helpful staff. The traditional decor suits the building rather than chasing modern minimalism. Included breakfast, a cocktail bar and a wellness area with a hot tub, sauna and steam room round out a strong package.

The main compromises are practical. Parking is in a paid public garage across the street, and street-facing rooms can pick up traffic noise; light sleepers should request an interior room. Book massages ahead rather than counting on availability. We'd skip it if sleek contemporary interiors or parking within the hotel are priorities.

Best for: couples on a downtown weekend; travelers who enjoy historic hotels; business travelers wanting room to spread out
Watch out for: traffic noise in street-facing rooms; paid parking across the street; massages need advance planning
Location: Walkable downtown base for restaurants, bars and cultural attractions.
Rooms: Guests consistently praise generous space and comfortable beds; fireplaces and whirlpool tubs depend on room type.
Cleanliness: A standout strength, with repeated recent praise across Tripadvisor and Expedia.
Service: Friendly, helpful staff dominate the feedback; isolated billing and maintenance complaints do not define the overall picture.
Amenities: Included breakfast, cocktail bar, gym, hot tub, sauna and steam room; massages cost extra.
Fees and surprises: Public-garage parking costs extra; early check-in and late checkout may incur fees, and pets are not accepted.
