#5 of 9 hotels in Downtown & Court Avenue by Axel's take. Downtown & Court Avenue is #1 of 5 places to stay in Des Moines. The best hotels in Downtown & Court Avenue, ranked · Where to stay in Des Moines

Axel's take: 8.2/10

A strong event-night base with friendly staff, free parking and some dated edges. a no-frills 2-star hotel beside the Iowa Events Center, scored for what it is.

This no-frills 2-star makes most sense for concerts, games and conventions: Casey’s Center and the Iowa Events Center are an easy walk away. It’s a strong pick for a practical downtown stay, with free parking and hot breakfast adding real value. Expedia and Booking.com guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds; the indoor pool is a useful extra rather than the main attraction.

The trade-off is an older property rather than a polished downtown hotel. Guests mention dated bathrooms and occasional maintenance issues, while some recent reviews report lingering room or hallway odors. Parking is included, but event-night crowding can complicate arrival. We’d choose it for convenience and the basics, and skip it if fresh interiors and consistently pristine bathrooms matter most.

Best for: concert and game nights; convention attendees; value-minded downtown stays
Watch out for: dated bathrooms and occasional maintenance issues; some reports of lingering odors; parking can fill during events
Location: Easy walking access to Casey’s Center and the Iowa Events Center is its biggest advantage.
Rooms: Generally comfortable, with microwaves and refrigerators; bathrooms and fixtures can show their age.
Cleanliness: Recent feedback is mostly positive, though some guests report room or hallway odors.
Service: Friendly, helpful front-desk staff are the most consistent strength across booking sites.
Amenities: Free hot breakfast, Wi-Fi, an indoor heated pool and an exercise room cover the basics well.
Fees and surprises: Parking is free but can get crowded; pets incur a fee, with one pet per room up to 100 pounds.
