#5 of 9 hotels in Altoona & Prairie Meadows by Axel's take. Altoona & Prairie Meadows is #3 of 5 places to stay in Des Moines. The best hotels in Altoona & Prairie Meadows, ranked · Where to stay in Des Moines

Axel's take: 7.9/10

A solid Altoona overnight stop, but don't count on a swim. a no-frills budget chain hotel near Adventureland and Prairie Meadows, scored for what it is.

This no-frills budget chain hotel is a good fit for a short Altoona stay, especially for Prairie Meadows or Adventureland. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff; Booking.com guests also highlight the convenient location and hospitality. Free breakfast and parking make it a practical, good-value base, while in-room microwaves and refrigerators cover the basics.

The main catch is the indoor pool: guests on several sites report a prolonged closure, including Expedia stays in June 2026, and Choice's current website no longer lists it. We'd book assuming no swimming unless the hotel confirms otherwise. Room-condition feedback is less consistent than the staff praise, with some maintenance complaints. It's a sensible overnight choice, but we'd skip it for a pool-centered family break or a walkable downtown Des Moines stay.

Best for: Prairie Meadows visitors; short Adventureland trips; road-trippers wanting breakfast and parking
Watch out for: prolonged indoor-pool closure; reopening unconfirmed; some room-maintenance complaints; about 10 miles from downtown Des Moines
Location: Across from Prairie Meadows, near I-80 and about a mile from Adventureland.
Rooms: Simple king or two-queen rooms with microwaves and refrigerators; condition feedback varies.
Cleanliness: Recent Expedia feedback is strongly positive, though Booking.com reports are less consistent.
Service: Helpful, friendly staff are a recurring strength across guest-review sites.
Amenities: Free hot breakfast, Wi-Fi, parking and a gym; do not assume the indoor pool is available.
Fees and surprises: Laundry costs extra; minimum check-in age is 21, and only service animals are permitted.
