Axel's take: 8.2/10

A strong riverfront base, provided you can live with compact rooms and elevator waits. A practical 4-star business hotel in a historic riverfront tower, scored for what it is.

Club Quarters is a practical 4-star in historic Mather Tower, not a luxury retreat. We'd pick it for exploring Chicago: the Riverwalk is across the street, with Michigan Avenue and Millennium Park within easy walking distance. Recent Tripadvisor, Expedia and Agoda guests repeatedly praise helpful staff and generally clean rooms. Coffee, filtered-water stations and guest laundry add useful everyday value; a river-view room makes the location more rewarding.

The compromises are compact rooms, some tired furnishings and recurring reports of slow or temporarily unavailable elevators. Street noise and loud air-conditioning also crop up, so light sleepers should request a quieter room. Don't assume your room includes a fridge; confirm the category before booking. It's a strong choice for travelers spending their days out, but we'd skip it for spacious rooms or polished four-star luxury.

• Best for: First-time Chicago sightseers; Solo and business travelers; Couples prioritizing location

• Watch out for: Compact rooms and some dated furnishings; Elevator waits and intermittent outages; Street or air-conditioning noise

• Location: Across from the Riverwalk, convenient for Michigan Avenue, Millennium Park and downtown transit.

• Rooms: Functional, often compact and sometimes dated; confirm river views and fridge availability when booking.

• Cleanliness: Broadly positive across sites, with occasional housekeeping misses rather than a dominant negative pattern.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming staff are a consistent strength in recent guest feedback.

• Amenities: Gym, guest laundry, communal coffee and filtered-water stations favor practical stays.

• Fees and surprises: Parking costs extra; early check-in and late checkout can incur fees.
