6.9/10
Useful kitchens and friendly staff, but maintenance and remodeling warrant caution.
Sonesta Simply Suites Charlotte University is a budget extended-stay hotel, formerly Candlewood Suites, rather than a conventional full-service three-star. It's a reasonable pick for self-catering stays near UNC Charlotte: full kitchens, free parking and spacious suites are its strongest selling points. Expedia and Google guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, and many recent visitors report clean, comfortable rooms. We'd consider it for a practical work or campus visit, not a special occasion.
The trade-off is uneven upkeep. Recent guests describe worn carpets, musty rooms and laundry-machine problems alongside positive stays. A September 22, 2026 Expedia review reports remodeling with blocked entrances; confirm whether that work continues. Sonesta also still displays an elevator-outage notice ending August 29, without a year, so verify access if stairs are difficult. Full housekeeping is only scheduled at 14-day intervals. We'd skip it if daily cleaning or consistently polished surroundings matter.

Best for: Budget-conscious extended stays; UNC Charlotte visitors with a car; Travelers who cook their own meals
Watch out for: Recently reported remodeling; confirm current disruption; Elevator and laundry reliability; No daily housekeeping
Location: Convenient for UNC Charlotte and nearby restaurants; better suited to driving than an Uptown-focused stay.
Rooms: Spacious kitchen-equipped suites, but recent reports of worn carpets and mustiness temper the appeal.
Cleanliness: Many recent guests praise clean rooms, although room and common-area standards appear inconsistent.
Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a recurring strength across Expedia and Google reviews.
Amenities: Full kitchens, free parking, Wi-Fi, a gym and on-site laundry; guests report some machines out of service.
Fees and surprises: Expect a deposit and pet fees; confirm laundry charges, remodeling status and elevator availability.
