Sonesta hotels rated: 5.1/10 for how they treat paying guests
Rank 19 of 21 · Know the catches · Updated October 27, 2026
5.1/10
Sonesta is a hotel-by-hotel bet, not a default pick
Our take: We'd book Sonesta selectively, not on the name alone.[1][2][Axel data] It particularly suits economy shoppers willing to shortlist Americas Best Value Inn, which ranked second in its J.D. Power segment.[3] The main catches are mandatory fees at some hotels and cancellation terms that depend on the property and rate.[4][5][6]
Best for
- Property-by-property comparison shoppers
- Economy travelers considering Americas Best Value Inn
- ES Suites guests who value included breakfast
Watch out for
- Mandatory property fees and separate parking
- Hotel-specific cancellation penalties
- No Travel Pass benefits on OTA bookings

Mandatory fees reach urban and extended-stay hotels, while current first-screen pricing and the fee lawsuit's final outcome remain unclear.
Deadlines vary by hotel and rate; 53% of quoted rates across 18 hotels were refundable, with a mix of close-in and longer cancellation windows.
Flexible bookings offer a route to lower prices, but there is no confirmed operational chain-wide guarantee or universal lower-rate adjustment right.
Free enrollment opens discounts up to 10%, but every OTA booking loses points, qualifying nights and member benefits, including elite perks.
Property-specific awards offer some predictability, but earning cuts, inactivity expiry and availability-dependent benefits weaken Travel Pass.
Hotel-set holds, early-departure charges and extended-stay repricing create costly risks; pet charges and checkout terms also vary.
Hotel-level reviews are uneven, and weak satisfaction results for Select and Simply Suites outweigh some of Americas Best Value Inn's strong economy showing.
Compare totals, not room rates
Sonesta acknowledges that mandatory fees belong in advertised prices, but we could not confirm its current first-rate website or app display.[7] Travelers United sued over allegedly omitted fees in August 2023, and classes were certified in December 2024.[8][9] Certification is not a liability finding, and we could not confirm a final judgment or settlement as of October 26, 2026.[9]
Axel's suppliers quoted 8,018 rates at 18 Sonesta hotels from September 26 to October 25, 2026, excluding the Philippines and Indonesia.[Axel data] Across those 18 hotels, 54% of rates carried a mandatory property fee, and 33% of hotels had one on most rates; the typical fee where shown was $29 nightly, excluding taxes. This is a small hotel sample, and supplier omissions make those fee shares a floor, not a ceiling.
Two hotel examples show the range: The Shelburne Sonesta New York lists a $42-plus-tax nightly facilities fee, while Royal Sonesta San Juan lists a 22% resort fee plus applicable taxes.[4][5] We'd compare the payable total rather than treating a bundled credit as equivalent to cash savings.[4]
Parking can sit on top of the mandatory fee: for example, Royal Sonesta Kaua‘i lists $30 nightly self-parking separately from its $45-plus-tax resort fee.[10][11] Paid parking also reaches airport extended-stay hotels, with Sonesta ES Suites Dulles Airport providing a $5-per-night example.[12]
Flexibility depends on the exact rate
Sonesta publishes no universal numerical cancellation deadline; the hotel and rate rules shown before checkout control.[6] Deposit amounts and charging schedules are also reservation-specific.[6] Its SONAP advance-booking offer advertises savings of up to 15% for bookings at least seven days ahead, not a typical or guaranteed discount.[13] Restrictions deserve equal attention: for example, Ocean Point Resort's Commit & Save offer is prepaid and nonrefundable.[14]
Among the same rates across 18 hotels, 53% were refundable.[Axel data] Of those refundable rates, 45% allowed free cancellation until less than 24 hours before check-in, 36% required 24 to 72 hours, and 19% required at least 72 hours. If a lower price appears, we'd check replacement availability and the full total before cancelling a flexible reservation within its deadline.[6]
Sonesta's reservation tool offers modification and cancellation, but does not promise that an existing booking can simply be repriced downward.[15] We could not confirm an operational chain-wide best-rate guarantee.[16] The New York site's published promise still names Affinia and requires a claim within 24 hours of booking, so we would not rely on it without confirmation.[16] A useful hotel-specific exception is Red Lion Inn & Suites Everett, which promises to adjust an existing reservation when a guest finds a lower rate and contacts the hotel.[17]
Free membership, fewer benefits elsewhere
Travel Pass is free, and Sonesta advertises member savings of up to 10%, not 10% off every reservation.[6][13] The TPMEM offer permits enrollment when booking, although a valid membership ID must be attached to the reservation.[18] The discount applies to the best available rate and cannot be combined with other discounts, packages or promotions, so compare other public offers too.[18]
Every third-party OTA booking loses stay points, qualifying-night credit and Travel Pass benefits, even for elite members.[19] That can mean giving up upgraded Wi-Fi and eligible elite breakfast or upgrades, not just points.[19][20] Some consortia and negotiated-corporate rates can qualify, so an intermediary does not automatically make a rate ineligible.[19] For third-party reservations, Sonesta directs cancellation requests back to the booking provider.[21]
Useful awards, weaker earning and promises
Travel Pass awards 10 base points per qualifying US dollar at Royal Sonesta, Sonesta Hotels & Resorts, Sonesta Select and Red Lion, versus five at ES Suites, Simply Suites, Americas Best Value Inn and Signature Inn.[22] ES Suites earning was halved on July 15, 2025, while elite bonuses were reduced across the program.[23] The same changes removed the five-night-per-stay cap on elite qualifying-night credit, which helps longer stays count fully.[23]
Sonesta's official redemption directory displays property labels from 10,000 to 60,000 points, though those labels are not a guaranteed live-booking range or program maximum.[24] Independent guidance describes property-specific fixed award levels rather than fully dynamic pricing, but no current published award chart.[25] Reward nights have no blackout dates, yet availability can be limited and minimum stays can apply.[19]
Points expire after 24 months of inactivity, with qualifying earning or redemption activity resetting the clock.[22] Gold status requires 20 qualifying nights or 20,000 qualifying points per year, and its advertised continental breakfast is unavailable at some locations.[20] Upgrades and other benefits are subject to availability, and the published chart gives no guaranteed late-checkout hour.[20][19]
Check holds and early-departure terms
Sonesta leaves stay-related billing with individual hotels and does not publish one universal deposit amount.[6] Its consumer guidance warns that full-service Sonesta and Royal Sonesta holds can potentially reach $150 to $300 or more per night, but these are indicative amounts rather than contractual limits.[7] The same guidance says unused debit-card holds can take seven to 14 business days to release, depending on the bank.[7]
Sonesta's ES Suites guidance warns that shortening a weekly or monthly stay can retroactively raise the nightly price for nights already used.[26] Separate early-departure charges also exist: for example, Royal Sonesta Washington DC Dupont Circle may charge one night plus tax unless the revised departure is declared at check-in, while Sonesta Select Detroit Auburn Hills lists $50 per booking.[27][28] We'd get the shortening-stay calculation in writing before committing to a long reservation.[26]
Pet fees vary by location, while ADA-defined service animals accompanying registered guests are exempt from pet fees.[29] Two hotel examples illustrate why checking matters: Royal Sonesta Washington DC Dupont Circle permits up to two pets per suite free, while Royal Sonesta Houston Galleria charges $150 per stay.[30][27]
Americas Best Value Inn stands out
Among 38 Sonesta hotels Axel has reviewed against their class and price, the average was 7.63 out of 10, with 42% scoring at least eight and 18% below seven.[Axel data] Across all 15,835 hotels Axel has reviewed, the average was 8.10 and 8% scored below seven. That makes Sonesta a property-first booking, not a chain we'd choose without checking the individual hotel.
J.D. Power's 2026 results reinforce the need to distinguish brands: Sonesta Select ranked last among 18 upscale brands, and Sonesta Simply Suites ranked eighth of nine in its extended-stay segment.[1][2] Sonesta Hotels & Resorts ranked 17th of 18 upscale brands.[1] Americas Best Value Inn was the positive exception, ranking second of 13 economy brands and 63 points above its segment average.[3]
Royal Sonesta scored seven points below its upper-upscale segment average, while ES Suites was four points below its extended-stay segment average.[31][2] J.D. Power cautions that numerical differences are not necessarily statistically significant.[31] Select and Simply Suites' weak results pull our consistency judgment lower, partly offset by Americas Best Value Inn's strong economy showing.[1][2][3]
- Axel's take, 38 Sonesta hotels reviewed: average 7.6/10; 42% score 8 or higher, 18% score below 7. Each hotel is scored for what it is, against its class and price. Across all hotels Axel has reviewed, the average is 8.1 and 8% score below 7.
- Rates Axel's suppliers quoted, September 26 to October 25, 2026: 8,018 rates at 18 hotels. 53% were refundable, and 45% of those could be cancelled free until less than 24 hours before check-in. 33% of hotels added a mandatory resort, destination or similar fee to most rates (typically $29 a night where charged).

Which Sonesta brands to book
- The Royal Sonesta (Mixed): Worth a property-specific shortlist, not an automatic premium pick: its J.D. Power result was seven points below the upper-upscale average.[31] Check mandatory fees and parking separately, as the Kaua‘i example charges both.[10][11]
- Sonesta Hotels & Resorts (Mixed): We'd require a convincing individual hotel and total price: the brand ranked 17th of 18 upscale brands in J.D. Power's 2026 study.[1] The Shelburne's $42-plus-tax nightly facilities fee shows why the room rate alone is insufficient.[4]
- Sonesta Select (Skip if you can): Skip it as a default upscale choice: Select ranked last among 18 brands in its J.D. Power segment, 82 points below average.[1] A specific hotel can still merit consideration, but the brand result warrants caution.[1]
- Sonesta ES Suites (Solid): Our stronger extended-stay shortlist within Sonesta: breakfast is promoted as included, and its J.D. Power result was only four points below its segment average.[13][2] Check the cost of shortening a weekly or monthly stay.[26]
- Sonesta Simply Suites (Skip if you can): We'd look elsewhere first for extended stay: Simply Suites ranked eighth of nine in its J.D. Power segment, 40 points below average.[2] It also earns five base points per qualifying dollar, versus Select's 10.[22]
- Red Lion (Mixed): Check which product you are booking: Red Lion Hotels is positioned upper-midscale, while Red Lion Inn & Suites is midscale.[32] Participating Red Lion hotels earn 10 base points per qualifying dollar.[22]
- Americas Best Value Inn (Our pick): Our economy shortlist pick within Sonesta, based on second place among 13 economy brands in J.D. Power's 2026 results.[3] Still read the penalty: the Canton hotel provides an example of a full-stay late-cancellation charge, not a brand-wide rule.[33]
- Signature Inn (Mixed): Expect a retro-styled, conversion-oriented upper-economy brand rather than the full-service Sonesta product.[34] Participating hotels earn five base points per qualifying dollar in Travel Pass.[22]
How to book Sonesta well
- Before you book, compare the full stay total including mandatory fees and any parking you need.[4][10][11]
- Choose Americas Best Value Inn for an economy shortlist, then check the individual hotel's cancellation penalty.[3][33]
- Choose ES Suites if included breakfast matters, but confirm how leaving early would change a weekly or monthly rate.[13][26]
- Choose a qualified direct rate if Travel Pass points and elite benefits matter, because every OTA booking forfeits them.[19]
- Before you book with a debit card, confirm the incidental hold and allow for the bank's release time.[7]

What would raise the score
- Show and maintain fee-inclusive first prices across every website and app market, with a clear hotel-level fee inventory.
- Set a chain-wide flexible-rate cancellation floor of 24 hours before arrival and display penalties beside each rate.
- Publish an operational best-rate guarantee and let eligible flexible bookings move to a lower price without cancellation.
- Restore the reduced earning rates, publish award-price limits and guarantee clearly defined elite benefits at participating hotels.
Questions about Sonesta
Does Sonesta charge resort or destination fees?
Some hotels do, including city and extended-stay properties, not only resorts.[4][35] Examples include a $42-plus-tax nightly facilities fee at The Shelburne Sonesta New York and a $17-plus-tax nightly resort fee at Sonesta ES Suites Orlando International Drive.[4][35]
Can I cancel a Sonesta booking for free?
It depends on the hotel, rate and deadline shown before checkout.[6] Check both the cancellation penalty and deposit terms, since Sonesta publishes no single chain-wide amount for either.[6]
Will Sonesta lower my price after I book?
We could not confirm a universal right to a lower-rate adjustment or an operational chain-wide best-rate guarantee.[15][16] With a refundable reservation, check whether cancelling and rebooking is permitted before the deadline; Red Lion Inn & Suites Everett separately promises adjustments when contacted about a lower rate.[6][17]
Do I get Sonesta points and elite benefits through Expedia or Booking.com?
No: every OTA booking is ineligible for stay points, qualifying-night credit and Travel Pass benefits, including for elite members.[19] Some consortia and negotiated-corporate rates can qualify, but adding a membership number does not make an excluded OTA rate eligible.[19]
Is breakfast free at Sonesta?
Not chain-wide: Sonesta promotes included breakfast at ES Suites, while Travel Pass advertises continental breakfast for Gold and Platinum members with location exclusions.[13][20] Confirm the specific hotel's offering rather than assuming every Sonesta stay includes it.[20][19]
Is Knights Inn included in Sonesta Travel Pass?
Sonesta describes Knights Inn as a standalone brand outside Sonesta.com and Travel Pass.[36][37] Do not confuse it with Red Lion, Americas Best Value Inn and Signature Inn, which joined Travel Pass in April 2024.[37]
