Meliá delivers good stays, but flexibility needs checking

Our take: We'd book Meliá for its well-rated hotels, not for an automatic promise of flexibility.[1][Axel data] It suits travelers willing to compare individual properties and rate conditions; the main catch is that special-rate terms can override the generous arrival-day cancellation default.[2][1]

Best for

  • Travelers choosing hotels individually
  • Luxury and all-inclusive shortlists
  • Members comparing eligible direct rates

Watch out for

  • Rate-specific cancellation cutoffs
  • OTA points and tier-night exclusions
  • All-inclusive extras and room-category limits

Scorecard

Total-price honesty (20%)
7.0

Mandatory fees appeared infrequently in the small quoted sample, but booking terms allow exceptions and do not guarantee all-in first prices.

Cancellation flexibility (15%)
5.0

Special-rate exceptions weaken the arrival-day default, and 48% of refundable quotes in Axel's small sample of 21 hotels required cancellation at least 72 hours before check-in.

Repriceability (15%)
5.0

Flexible bookings can offer a cancel-and-rebook route, but automatic downward repricing and current consumer best-rate-guarantee terms remain unclear.

Channel and member-rate fairness (10%)
6.2

Free membership reduces the price barrier, but advertised discounts reach 20%, and OTA bookings lose stay points and tier-night credit.

Loyalty value and fairness (10%)
5.2

Dynamic awards, a 12-month inactivity deadline and availability-dependent elite benefits limit the value of otherwise accessible earning and redemption options.

Gotcha fees and terms (10%)
7.0

Free portal Wi-Fi helps, while documented deposits, paid late checkout and dining exclusions are property-specific.

Consistency of the stay (20%)
7.8

Reviewed hotels score strongly for their class, with none below seven; Which? also recommends Meliá, although property-specific maintenance and noise complaints remain.

Low observed fees, incomplete upfront assurance

Meliá's booking terms, updated October 16, 2026, say booking-process prices include applicable taxes and fees unless expressly stated otherwise.[1] That wording does not promise inclusion from the first price display, and we could not confirm first-screen inclusion across its hotels.[1]

Rates Axel's suppliers quoted from September 26 to October 25, 2026 covered 1,397 rates at 21 hotels, excluding the Philippines and Indonesia.[Axel data] Mandatory property fees appeared on 3% of rates, while 5% of those 21 hotels had a fee on most rates. Supplier omissions make these shares a floor, not a ceiling, and the small hotel sample cannot establish chain-wide prevalence.

Two examples show why the individual quote matters: Air Canada Vacations lists a US$43 plus tax nightly facility fee at INNSiDE New York NoMad and a US$32 plus tax nightly resort fee at Meliá Orlando Celebration, both payable locally.[3][4] Orlando's official page includes a parking space during the stay, subject to availability and hotel conditions, but that does not remove the resort fee.[4][5]

Parking varies too: for example, Hotels.com lists Meliá Sitges at €26 per day, while Meliá Isla Canela's posted regulations provide free uncovered parking.[6][7] A November 2023 law-firm announcement named Meliá in a resort-fee investigation, but it identifies no filed complaint, judgment or settlement.[8]

The selected rate beats the default

Meliá's general terms describe free cancellation before a country-specific cutoff on arrival day, in hotel-local time, but special rates follow their own conditions.[1] Under the default clause, missing the deadline costs the first night's total, including VAT and fees.[1] The default also treats the booking card as a guarantee rather than requiring advance payment.[1]

In the same rates at 21 hotels, 60% were refundable.[Axel data] Among refundable rates, only 6% allowed free cancellation less than 24 hours before check-in, 45% required 24 to 72 hours, and 48% required at least 72 hours. We'd therefore buy flexibility by the written rate deadline, not by relying on the arrival-day default.[1]

Seasonal resort terms can be much tighter: for example, Vacation Express lists a two-night penalty within seven days of arrival at Paradisus Los Cabos for November 1 to 30, 2026.[9] For December 23, 2026 to January 2, 2027, its schedule lists a full-stay penalty within 21 days at Los Cabos and Paradisus La Perla; these are supplier-specific terms.[9]

A lower price later can create a cancel-and-rebook opportunity while your original rate remains penalty-free and a replacement is available.[1] We could not confirm automatic downward repricing or current consumer best-rate-guarantee payout and claim terms.[10][11][12] The historical lower-rate match plus 10% discount comes from 2013 material, so we would not rely on it as a current promise.[12]

OTAs cost points and qualifying nights

Book a cash-paid OTA rate and you lose stay points and tier-qualifying night credit, whichever OTA you use; tour-operator rates also do not earn stay points.[13] Eligible retail-travel-agent and GDS rates can still earn points, so this is not a blanket exclusion of every third-party booking.[13] We could not confirm that OTA bookings lose every on-property elite benefit.[13]

MeliáRewards is free to join and advertises member discounts of up to 20%, not a fixed saving on every booking.[14] Meliá separately advertises a 5% app-booking discount, but we could not confirm that it always stacks with member prices.[15] We'd compare the complete room, meal and cancellation terms rather than choose a channel from the advertised percentage alone.[1][14][15]

Join for prices, scrutinize the benefits

Eligible spending earns 10 points per euro at White, rising to 14 at Platinum or Platinum for Life.[16] Ordinary points remain active if you earn or redeem at least once every 12 months, with each transaction restarting the period.[17]

Award pricing is dynamic rather than governed by a published award chart, according to Upgraded Points.[18] Meliá advertises full or partial payment starting at 2,000 points, but that is a payment threshold, not the price of a complete free night.[14] Check the hotel's participation before building a redemption around it.[19]

Silver-and-higher companion breakfast requires purchasing standard breakfast as an arrival extra on a room-only booking; all-inclusive hotels and externally managed restaurants are excluded.[14][13] Gold and Platinum late checkout, and Platinum's one-category upgrade, depend on availability.[13] Announced rollover nights and companion-member night credit are January 2027 benefits, not current entitlements.[20]

Check deposits and what included means

Meliá's published Wi-Fi portal terms make access through that service free, without establishing that every premium connection option is free.[21] Its Pet Friendly concept permits up to two dogs per room without weight limits, but hotel participation and booking arrangements vary.[22]

For example, Expedia lists a US$100 deposit per stay at INNSiDE New York NoMad, not per night.[23] A second example, ME Dubai, has a seller-listed AED500 arrival damage deposit collected by card and refundable subject to inspection.[24]

All-inclusive does not mean every restaurant or experience: for example, Sal Steak Cave at Paradisus Playa del Carmen costs extra, although Family Concierge guests receive one included dinner per stay, and admission is adults-only.[25] At the same hotel, the offsite private-cenote yoga experience is restricted to superior rooms.[26]

A 2025-labelled guest guide for Meliá Tortuga Beach lists late checkout at €40 until 16:00 and €80 until 20:00, with confirmation required the preceding day.[27] Treat those as published examples and reconfirm current prices before relying on them.[27]

Good hotel scores, property checks still matter

Across 50 hotels Axel has reviewed, Meliá averaged 8.46, with 94% scoring at least eight and none below seven.[Axel data] Those ratings judge each hotel against its class and price, rather than rewarding luxury alone.

Which?'s January 23, 2026 results gave Meliá an 80% customer score and Recommended Provider status.[28] Cleanliness, bed comfort and location received five out of five stars, while customer service and value received four.[28] This supports our positive view of stays, but the pooled group result does not identify a strongest brand.[28]

For luxury, we'd shortlist Gran Meliá hotel by hotel: for example, Villa Agrippina in Rome and Hotel Fénix in Madrid hold 2026 Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star hotel ratings.[29] Those awards support the named properties, not a uniform Gran Meliá standard.[29]

For Sol, check noise carefully: Sol Tenerife has recurring dated-room and nightlife-noise reports across review sites, alongside guests reporting clean rooms and willingness to return.[30][31] Within Meliá Hotels & Resorts, Meliá Caribe Beach provides another property-specific caution, with repeated maintenance and problem-resolution complaints alongside praise for staff, housekeeping and the beach.[32] Neither example establishes that its whole brand performs poorly.[30][31][32]

  • Axel's take, 50 Meliá Hotels International hotels reviewed: average 8.5/10; 94% score 8 or higher, 0% score below 7. Each hotel is scored for what it is, against its class and price. Across all hotels Axel has reviewed, the average is 8.1 and 8% score below 7.
  • Rates Axel's suppliers quoted, September 26 to October 25, 2026: 1,397 rates at 21 hotels. 60% were refundable, and 6% of those could be cancelled free until less than 24 hours before check-in. 5% of hotels added a mandatory resort, destination or similar fee to most rates.

Which Meliá Hotels International brands to book

  • Gran Meliá (Solid): A luxury shortlist worth checking property by property, with positive Forbes inspection evidence at three named hotels rather than a brand-wide performance guarantee.[2][29]
  • Paradisus by Meliá (Solid): Choose it for luxury all-inclusive positioning, but inspect restaurant and experience exclusions for your exact room category.[2][25][26]
  • ME by Meliá (Solid): Best considered for its design, art and gastronomy focus, not an assumption that every ancillary cost is included.[2][24]
  • The Meliá Collection (Solid): A fit for travelers seeking individually distinctive luxury hotels rather than a uniform property format.[2]
  • Meliá Hotels & Resorts (Solid): The broad work, leisure and family option; check recent property-level maintenance reports, including at Meliá Caribe Beach.[2][32]
  • INNSiDE by Meliá (Solid): Positioned for lifestyle-oriented business and leisure trips; New York NoMad specifically carries a distributor-listed mandatory facility fee.[2][3]

How to book Meliá Hotels International well

  • Choose a flexible rate only if its written cancellation cutoff fits your plans, since special rates override the general arrival-day clause.[1]
  • Before booking New York NoMad or Orlando Celebration, check whether the final total includes the locally payable facility or resort fee.[3][4]
  • Choose an eligible points-earning rate if tier progress matters, because cash-paid OTA stays do not earn qualifying nights.[13]
  • Before redeeming points, compare full-points and mixed-payment totals rather than treating 2,000 points as a free-night price.[33][14]
  • Skip Sol Tenerife if nightlife noise is a dealbreaker, given recurring reports across review sites.[30][31]

What would raise the score

  • Guarantee that the first displayed price includes every mandatory property fee across all countries and direct channels.
  • Set a clear cancellation floor of 24 hours before arrival for ordinary flexible rates, with exceptions displayed beside the price.
  • Publish current consumer best-rate-guarantee terms, a claim form and a straightforward route to lower an existing flexible booking's price.
  • Extend points inactivity expiry to at least 24 months and guarantee more elite benefits instead of making them availability-dependent.

Questions about Meliá Hotels International

Does Meliá charge resort or facility fees?

Some hotels do: Air Canada Vacations lists US$43 plus tax per room per night at INNSiDE New York NoMad and US$32 plus tax at Meliá Orlando Celebration.[3][4] These examples do not establish a chain-wide fee policy.[1][3][4]

Can I cancel a Meliá booking on arrival day?

The general terms describe an arrival-day cutoff that varies by country, but special rates follow their own conditions.[1] In the same rates covering 21 hotels, 60% were refundable, and 48% of refundable rates required cancellation at least 72 hours before check-in.[Axel data]

Do I earn MeliáRewards points through Booking.com or Expedia?

No, OTA rates do not earn stay points, and cash-paid OTA stays do not earn tier-qualifying nights.[13] Eligible non-OTA retail-agent and GDS rates can earn points.[13]

Will Meliá refund the difference if the price drops?

We could not confirm automatic downward repricing or current consumer best-rate-guarantee compensation terms.[10][11][12] Cancel-and-rebook can work while your selected rate remains penalty-free and the lower-priced replacement is available.[1]

Do MeliáRewards points expire?

Ordinary points remain active if you earn or use points at least once every 12 months, with each transaction restarting the period.[17] Individual promotions may have separate conditions.[17]

Are all Meliá hotels all-inclusive?

No, the group spans several hotel formats, while Paradisus is specifically positioned as a luxury all-inclusive brand.[2] Even at Paradisus, selected restaurants and experiences can cost extra or require a particular room category.[25][26]
