Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong Manchester base with welcoming staff, comfortable rooms and one privacy compromise. a contemporary 4-star city hotel on First Street, scored for what it is.

INNSiDE is a contemporary 4-star on First Street that gets the city-hotel essentials right. Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor guests consistently praise its cleanliness, comfortable rooms and genuinely helpful staff. It's a strong pick for business trips or a theatre weekend, with Deansgate transport and central attractions within walking distance. The included minibar is a welcome extra, while the gym, complimentary sauna and steam room add substance beyond the styling.

The main compromise is the open-plan bathroom arrangement in many rooms: several guests flag limited privacy, so check the layout before sharing with a friend or colleague. Breakfast earns plenty of praise, although some guests find the cooked buffet less convincing. Parking is off-site and chargeable, and a city visitor charge applies. We'd skip it if a fully separate bathroom is essential unless you confirm a suitable room.

• Best for: business travelers; couples on city breaks; theatre and concert weekends

• Watch out for: limited bathroom privacy in many rooms; chargeable off-site parking; city visitor charge

• Location: Walkable First Street base near Deansgate transport, theatres, restaurants and HOME.

• Rooms: Modern, comfortable rooms with included minibar; check the open-plan bathroom layout before booking.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and recent Tripadvisor reviews.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff attract repeated praise across the major review sites.

• Amenities: Gino D’Acampo restaurant, gym, complimentary sauna and steam room; spa treatments cost extra.

• Fees and surprises: Paid off-site parking, city visitor charge and a deposit; breakfast inclusion depends on your booking.
