Loews hotels rated: 5.9/10 for how they treat paying guests

Our take: We'd book Loews for the individual hotel and its benefits, not for repeat-stay rewards[1][2][3]. It particularly suits Universal visitors who will use included Express Unlimited at Portofino Bay, Hard Rock Orlando or Royal Pacific[3]. The catch is property-specific pricing and deadlines: Miami Beach charges a $50 nightly resort fee plus tax, while Portofino Bay's standard cancellation refund requires at least six days' notice[4][5].

Budget for fees and parking

Loews' March 31, 2026 inventory lists all 27 hotels in the United States[6]. Since May 12, 2025, the FTC has required calculable mandatory lodging fees in the most prominent upfront price, while allowing government taxes to be excluded initially[7]. We could not confirm consistent first-screen inclusion across Loews' booking channels or a Loews-specific fee-enforcement case or settlement[7][8][9].

Rates Axel's suppliers quoted from September 26 to October 25, 2026 covered 1,528 rates at 14 hotels[Axel data]. In that small sample, 32% of rates carried a mandatory property fee, 36% of hotels had one on most rates, and the typical charge where present was $40 a night. Suppliers can omit fees, so those shares are a floor, not a ceiling.

For example, Miami Beach publishes a $50 nightly resort fee plus tax and $60 overnight valet parking including tax[4]. Chicago publishes a $30 daily destination fee plus tax, with overnight self-parking at $63 or valet at $85[10]. We'd compare the full stay total, not just the room rate, at either hotel[4][10].

Parking is not just a downtown expense: for example, Loews Arlington charges $29 plus tax overnight, while Chicago O'Hare charges $46 per night with validation[11][12]. Arlington also warns of a possible $1.99 processing fee, and event or game-day parking rates can differ[11].

Refundable does not mean last-minute

Loews' purchase terms make the restrictions of the booked rate controlling[13]. Published hotel examples range from Chicago's 4 PM cutoff 24 hours before arrival to Kansas City's 4 PM cutoff 72 hours before arrival, generally with one night plus tax charged afterward[14][15].

Of the same rates, 74% were refundable[Axel data]. Among refundable offers, 18% allowed free cancellation less than 24 hours before check-in, 60% required 24 to 72 hours, and 22% required 72 hours or more.

Orlando terms can be tighter: for example, Cabana Bay requires a first-night-plus-tax deposit and refunds cancellations six or more days before arrival, with a one-night-plus-tax penalty inside that window[16]. Its deposit is normally charged within five business days of booking, with different collection timing for imminent arrivals[16]. As a separate prepaid example, Nashville advertises 15% off for booking at least seven days ahead, but requires full payment and prohibits refunds, cancellation and modification[17].

For a later price drop, we'd choose a refundable rate and rebook only while cancellation is still free and the replacement offer is available[18][19][Axel data]. Loews provides online changes, but we could not confirm a chain-wide price-only adjustment promise or current room-only best-rate guarantee[18][20][21]. Universal's separate qualifying vacation-package guarantee has a 48-hour claim window and excludes individual hotel-component prices[22].

Few loyalty penalties, some digital restrictions

Loews has no individual-stay loyalty program, so booking through a third party does not sacrifice Loews stay points or elite-night credit[1]. We'd compare identical rooms, cancellation terms and total prices rather than assume direct booking is always the better deal[13][1].

Universal conditions mobile check-in on booking through Universal Orlando or Universal Parks & Resorts Vacations and linking the reservation to a Universal Account, with availability varying by hotel and reservation[23]. Loews' digital-key terms also allow participating hotels to exclude certain travel-agent, wholesaler and third-party-website reservations[13].

Discounts are qualification-based rather than a replacement for YouFirst: for example, Loews Arlington advertises up to 10% off for AAA or AARP members[24]. Universal's ordinary passholder hotel offers advertise 10% to 30% savings, subject to availability, and require a valid Annual or Seasonal Pass at check-in[25].

The published Express Unlimited terms cover registered guests of the three eligible hotels without stating a direct-booking requirement[5]. American Express Travel also advertises the benefit with Portofino Bay stays, so third-party booking does not automatically remove it[26].

YouFirst is gone

Loews explicitly states that it has no individual-stay loyalty program and that guests cannot earn stay rewards or loyalty points[1]. YouFirst ended on December 6, 2018, not in a recent rebrand[27].

An ordinary Loews Account is for reservation management and related account functions, not a replacement points program[28]. MVP is separate: it applies to group contracts of at least 10 rooms, not ordinary individual stays[29].

At Universal Orlando, benefits follow the hotel booked: all its hotels offer conditional Early Park Admission of up to one hour with valid admission[2]. Only Portofino Bay, Hard Rock Orlando and Royal Pacific include Express Unlimited for participating attractions at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, excluding Epic Universe and Volcano Bay[3]. At those three hotels, the benefit runs from room-key issuance through park closing on checkout day[30].

Changes and extras can cost

Universal Parks & Resorts Vacations charges a nonrefundable $50 revision fee per transaction for changes to existing package elements within 45 days of arrival, while exempting earlier changes and product additions[31]. That is a package-booking rule, not a charge on ordinary Loews room-only reservations[31].

Early departure can be expensive: for example, Hard Rock Orlando says guests leaving early forfeit their reservation deposit, equal to one night plus tax[19]. Coral Gables' specific Stay Longer and Save offer goes further, repricing nights stayed at best available rates and restoring included benefits to retail prices after early departure[32].

Pet fees also vary: for example, Loews Arlington charges $50 per accommodation per stay for up to two cats or dogs, with service animals exempt[33]. Royal Pacific lists a $150 one-time pet fee per stay and a two-pet limit[34].

For example, Chicago charges 50% of the daily room rate for late checkout before 3 PM and 100% afterward, against a normal noon checkout[10]. Regency New York adds an 18% service charge, $10 delivery charge, 3% administrative fee and tax to optional in-room dining[35]. We could not confirm a uniform incidental-hold amount, so ask your hotel for its requirement before arrival[36].

Good hotels, with meaningful exceptions

The 12 Loews-system hotels Axel has reviewed in October 2026 average 8.81 out of 10, with every hotel at 8 or above and none below 7[Axel data]. That is encouraging, but the small group cannot establish performance across the whole portfolio.

We temper our consistency verdict because Loews scored 713 out of 1,000 in J.D. Power's 2026 luxury segment, ranking tenth of 12 brands and 28 points below the segment average[37]. In 2025 it scored 730 and ranked seventh of 12, four points below that year's segment average[38].

Favorable property examples include Kansas City, displayed at 9.2 out of 10 from 661 Booking.com reviews, and Loews Arlington, at 9.4 from 951 reviews[39][40]. Those results support our preference for these two hotels, not a strongest-to-weakest ranking of the entire chain[39][40].

Cabana Bay is our clearest caution, with repeated 2026 reviews describing housekeeping, cleanliness and maintenance problems[41]. Sapphire Falls has favorable aggregate review scores, but a separate review summary also flags recurring room-cleaning complaints[42][43].
