Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong Old Town boutique pick, with attentive staff and a rooftop worth using. A small upscale 4-star boutique hotel in Cartagena’s Walled City, scored for what it is.

Sophia is a 15-room upscale boutique hotel on Plaza de la Aduana, and a strong pick for exploring Cartagena on foot. Its historic building mixes traditional architecture with contemporary rooms rather than full-resort facilities. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise comfortable beds, cleanliness and genuinely helpful staff; Booking.com guests reinforce the location and room comfort. The rooftop views and well-liked breakfast give it appeal beyond simply being central.

The main compromise is the pool: think cooling-off dip, not proper swimming. The rooftop also hosts private events, so confirm access during your dates; one guest reported disrupted rest and restricted pool use. We'd choose Sophia for a couples' city break with personal service, but skip it if a large pool, extensive facilities or guaranteed evening quiet are essential.

• Best for: Couples exploring the Walled City; Travelers who prefer intimate boutique hotels; Sightseeing on foot

• Watch out for: Small rooftop pool; Private events can affect rooftop access and quiet; No on-site parking

• Location: On Plaza de la Aduana, within easy walking distance of historic sights, restaurants and shops.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and attractive rooms earn consistent praise; layouts and sizes vary by category.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength across recent Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are among the most consistently praised features.

• Amenities: Small rooftop pool and bar, ground-floor restaurant, Wi-Fi and a well-liked breakfast.

• Fees and surprises: Airport transfers cost extra; no parking, and rooftop event bookings warrant checking ahead.
