Axel's take: 7.7/10

Come for the old-town location and rooftop pool, not guaranteed sleep. A small, mid-range city hotel on Cartagena’s liveliest historic square, scored for what it is.

NH Cartagena Urban Royal is a small, mid-range hotel with a prime sightseeing address beside the Clock Tower. Minor Hotels markets it as four-star, but expect practical comfort rather than luxury. Its strongest assets are the rooftop pool, old-town views and staff: recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the welcome, cleanliness and breakfast. It’s a good pick for travelers who want to explore the walled city on foot.

The trade-off is substantial nighttime noise. Guests across both sites describe music and bass from nearby clubs and rooftop bars continuing into the early hours, especially in square-facing rooms. Some recent Expedia reviews also flag dated rooms and worn bathroom fittings. Request an interior room, accepting less outlook, but don’t assume silence. We’d skip it for a restful retreat or a polished four-star experience.

• Best for: Old-town sightseeing on foot; Nightlife-focused city breaks; Travelers who prioritize helpful staff

• Watch out for: Late-night music and bass; Some dated rooms and worn fittings; Breakfast may cost extra

• Location: Beside the Clock Tower on Plaza de los Coches; excellent for walking, busy after dark.

• Rooms: Air-conditioned and generally comfortable, but recent guests report uneven upkeep; square views bring noise.

• Cleanliness: Mostly positive recent feedback, though occasional musty-room reports warrant checking on arrival.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are a consistent strength across Tripadvisor and Expedia.

• Amenities: Small outdoor rooftop pool, terrace, restaurant, bar and free Wi-Fi.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast is not automatically included; airport transfers cost extra, and there is no onsite parking.
