Axel's take: 8.8/10

Character, helpful staff and a walkable location make Kartaxa a strong old-town base. A small mid-range heritage boutique hotel inside Cartagena’s city walls, scored for what it is.

Kartaxa is a small mid-range boutique hotel in a historic house in San Diego, inside Cartagena’s walls. It’s a strong pick for travelers who want character and walkability rather than resort facilities. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, cleanliness and breakfast; Booking.com’s strong overall ratings reinforce that picture. The plant-filled courtyard, literary touches and rooftop solarium give it more personality than a standard city hotel.

Choose your room carefully: some have only courtyard-facing windows or little natural light, and small bathrooms recur in guest feedback. The pool is for cooling off, not swimming laps, and there’s no elevator. We’d favor a larger room with confirmed exterior windows. Skip it if step-free access, consistently spacious rooms or modern-hotel polish matter more than atmosphere and location.

• Best for: Couples exploring the walled city; Solo travelers who like heritage hotels; Sightseers prioritizing walkability

• Watch out for: Some rooms lack exterior windows; Small bathrooms and variable room sizes; No elevator

• Location: Inside the walls near Las Bóvedas and Plaza de San Diego; convenient for exploring on foot, not a beachfront stay.

• Rooms: Individually decorated, air-conditioned rooms; confirm size and window outlook rather than relying on general photos.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Tripadvisor and Expedia feedback and Booking.com’s category ratings.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are among the most consistent reasons guests recommend it.

• Amenities: Small outdoor pool, rooftop solarium, courtyard, café and included breakfast; facilities suit a sightseeing base.

• Fees and surprises: No onsite parking; late checkout costs extra. Expedia welcomes children, so don’t assume an adults-only property.
