Axel's take: 7.3/10

A practical sightseeing base, but location and friendly staff outshine the aging rooms. A basic, older 3-star in Getsemaní near the walled city, scored for what it is.

Hotel Dorado Plaza Centro Histórico is a basic, older 3-star in Getsemaní, opposite Parque Centenario and a short walk from Cartagena’s walled city. It’s a sensible budget pick if you’ll spend most of your time exploring. Booking.com and Tripadvisor guests consistently put location and helpful staff among its strongest points, and many praise clean, comfortable rooms. Expect straightforward accommodation rather than boutique charm.

The trade-offs are meaningful: recent Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews repeatedly mention tired interiors, maintenance shortcomings and cold-only showers. Street-facing rooms can be noisy, while breakfast gets mixed reactions. Cleanliness is generally rated positively, but some recent guests describe lapses. There’s no pool on site; reported sister-hotel access is elsewhere in Bocagrande and needs confirming. We’d skip it if quiet nights, reliable hot water or polished rooms are priorities.

• Best for: Budget-minded sightseers; Travelers exploring on foot; Short city stays

• Watch out for: Repeated reports of cold-only showers; Aging rooms and uneven maintenance; Street noise; no on-site pool

• Location: Across from Parque Centenario in Getsemaní, convenient for walking to the walled city; not beachfront.

• Rooms: Air-conditioned and straightforward; condition varies, with recurring maintenance and street-noise complaints.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive aggregate ratings, tempered by some recent reports of inadequate cleaning.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a recurring strength, though problem handling receives occasional criticism.

• Amenities: Restaurant, breakfast and free Wi-Fi; Expedia lists no elevator or on-site parking.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast inclusion depends on the booking; confirm any off-site pool access and its conditions before reserving.
