Axel's take: 7.3/10

Come for the old-town location and friendly staff, not guaranteed quiet or polished rooms. a simple mid-range colonial hotel in Cartagena’s walled city, scored for what it is.

Don Pedro de Heredia is a simple mid-range colonial hotel whose strongest selling point is its position inside Cartagena’s walled city. It’s a good base for exploring on foot, with traditional wooden furnishings, a courtyard pool and a rooftop terrace adding character. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the location and helpful staff; many also report clean, comfortable rooms. We’d consider it for a sightseeing-focused stay rather than a hotel-centered break.

The trade-offs are substantial: recent reviews across sites describe late-night nightclub noise, dark inward-facing rooms and uneven maintenance. Repeated elevator breakdowns were still reported in August 2026, particularly awkward with breakfast on the fifth floor; confirm repairs before booking. Breakfast opinions vary, and inclusion depends on the reservation. We’d skip it for light sleepers, travelers needing dependable step-free access, or anyone expecting consistently modern rooms.

  • Best for: travelers exploring the old town on foot; value-minded visitors who enjoy traditional buildings

  • Watch out for: nightclub noise into the early hours; repeated elevator outages reported through August 2026; dark rooms and uneven maintenance

  • Location: Inside the walled city, within an easy walk of the Clock Tower, restaurants and historic sights; not beachfront.

  • Rooms: Air-conditioned rooms with traditional wooden furniture; many face inward, and guests report variable beds, lighting and bathroom condition.

  • Cleanliness: Generally positive aggregate ratings, though some recent guests describe dampness and bathroom-cleaning shortcomings.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful reception and breakfast staff are among the most consistent positives across sites.

  • Amenities: Courtyard pool, rooftop terrace and breakfast service; no on-site parking, and elevator reliability needs checking.

  • Fees and surprises: Confirm breakfast inclusion and applicable taxes before arrival; minibar items cost extra.
