Axel's take: 8.3/10

Choose it for the gardens, pools and warm service, not cutting-edge luxury. a historic five-star beach resort in Bocagrande, with older-style rooms, scored for what it is.

Hotel Caribe is a historic five-star resort in Bocagrande whose strongest selling points are its tropical grounds, generous pool areas and welcoming staff. We'd pick it for a relaxed, family-friendly base rather than a polished modern luxury stay. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise cleanliness, helpful service and the breakfast buffet, while the gardens' roaming wildlife gives the property distinctive character.

The main compromise is the accommodation: several recent guests describe dated furnishings, tired bathroom fittings or maintenance niggles, even when praising comfortable beds and good housekeeping. The beach club is across the street, not on a secluded private shoreline, and exploring the walled city generally means taking a taxi. It's a strong pick for travelers who prioritize outdoor space and old-fashioned character; we'd skip it if immaculate contemporary rooms or an Old Town doorstep matter most.

• Best for: families who prioritize pools; travelers who enjoy historic hotels; beach-and-city stays

• Watch out for: dated rooms and uneven bathroom upkeep; taxi trips to the walled city; street crossing to the beach club

• Location: Bocagrande, near restaurants and shops; across the street from the beach and outside the historic center.

• Rooms: Generally comfortable, but recurring reviews flag dated furnishings and bathroom maintenance.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest reviews, despite the property's age.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff receive repeated praise; occasional problem-resolution delays appear.

• Amenities: Large pool areas, tropical gardens, gym, spa and Kala Beach Club are the main draws.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is listed as free; airport transfers, pets and early or late check-in/out can cost extra.
