Axel's take: 8.8/10

Warm service and colonial character make this a strong base, provided you tolerate nightlife. an upscale colonial-style boutique hotel in lively Getsemaní, scored for what it is.

Hotel Capellán de Getsemaní is an upscale colonial-style boutique hotel that gets the important things right: comfortable rooms, consistently praised cleanliness and genuinely attentive staff. We'd pick it for exploring Cartagena on foot, with Getsemaní's restaurants nearby and the walled city a short walk away. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the welcome, while Booking.com guests highlight comfortable beds and well-kept rooms. The courtyard, rooftop pool and Clero restaurant give it appeal beyond the location.

The compromise is nighttime noise: several guests describe street music, crowds and party buses, particularly in street-facing rooms. Ask about a quieter room rather than assuming a premium category guarantees better sleep. Some rooms also have limited natural light, and the pool is for cooling off rather than swimming laps. It's a strong couples' city base; we'd skip it for guaranteed silence or a beachfront holiday.

• Best for: couples wanting boutique character; exploring Cartagena on foot; travelers who enjoy lively neighborhoods

• Watch out for: nightlife noise in street-facing rooms; limited daylight in some rooms; small rooftop pool

• Location: Walkable Getsemaní base near the walled city and convention center; not beachfront.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and attractive colonial styling; daylight and noise exposure vary.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and recent Tripadvisor reviews.

• Service: Recent guests repeatedly praise welcoming, helpful reception and restaurant staff.

• Amenities: Small rooftop pool, jacuzzi, rooftop bar, Clero restaurant and spa treatments.

• Fees and surprises: Airport transfers, nearby parking and early check-in or late checkout carry extra charges.
