Axel's take: 6.5/10

A refreshed budget stop, but cleanliness and maintenance remain too uneven for an easy recommendation. a no-frills 2-star roadside motel on Highway 280, scored for what it is.

Red Roof Inn Birmingham–Highway 280 is a no-frills 2-star motel at 4627 Highway 280, not the Extended Stay America in the supplied website link. Its strongest case is practical: proximity to Grandview Medical Center, free parking and Wi-Fi, and generally helpful staff. Red Roof says an April 2026 refresh added bedding, TVs and bathroom fittings. Several guests describe clean, comfortable rooms and good value.

The refresh hasn't settled the bigger concerns. Recent Expedia and Hotwire reviews repeatedly mention cockroaches, while July and September 2026 guests report a broken elevator. Other complaints concern mildew smells and unreliable fixtures. These sit alongside plenty of positive ratings, but they're meaningful failures even for a budget motel. There's no breakfast or pool. We'd consider it for a short, price-led stop; we'd skip it if dependable cleanliness or elevator access is essential.

• Best for: budget travelers with a car; short visits near Grandview Medical Center; travelers with one pet

• Watch out for: recurring cockroach and cleanliness reports; elevator failures reported through September 2026; no breakfast or pool

• Location: Highway 280 location near Grandview Medical Center; better suited to drivers than downtown sightseeing.

• Rooms: Exterior-corridor rooms refreshed in April 2026, but recent guests still report odors and maintenance faults.

• Cleanliness: Many guests find rooms clean, yet repeated recent cockroach reports prevent a confident recommendation.

• Service: Helpful staff earn frequent praise, though housekeeping and problem handling are inconsistent.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, parking and lobby coffee; paid laundry, but no breakfast or pool.

• Fees and surprises: Refundable credit-card deposit required; official policy allows one pet free and charges for a second.
