Axel's take: 8.7/10
A strong Banff base with comfortable rooms and useful extras, but not downtown convenience. A refreshed, no-frills motel on the edge of Banff, scored for what it is.
The Dorothy is a refreshed, no-frills motel on Banff’s northeastern edge, and it’s a strong pick for travelers who prioritize a comfortable base over full-service hotel polish. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff. Fridges, microwaves and a pleasant courtyard make it practical, while complimentary local Roam bus passes and access to Hotel Canoe’s hot pools and sauna add real value.
The trade-off is convenience: downtown is roughly a 20-minute walk, and reception and the hot pools are across the road at Hotel Canoe, not on-site. The exterior still looks like an older motel, and several guests mention busy parking. We’d skip it if you want everything under one roof or restaurants immediately outside your door; for hikers and value-minded couples, it delivers well.
-
Best for: value-minded couples; hikers and outdoor travelers; families wanting simple room amenities
-
Watch out for: off-site reception and hot pools; roughly 20-minute walk downtown; parking can be busy
-
Location: Edge-of-town setting; nearby bus stops and included local Roam passes help offset the downtown walk.
-
Rooms: Refreshed king or two-queen rooms with fridges, microwaves and showers rather than bathtubs.
-
Cleanliness: Strong recent praise overall; occasional bathroom-cleaning misses do not dominate the feedback.
-
Service: Guests generally praise helpful staff; check-in is at Hotel Canoe & Suites, 600 Banff Avenue.
-
Amenities: Courtyard, Wi-Fi and access to Hotel Canoe’s hot pools and sauna are useful extras.
-
Fees and surprises: Self-parking is included but can be busy; pet rooms require advance arrangements and a nightly pet fee.
