#5 of 9 hotels in Karangahape Road & Upper Queen Street by Axel's take. Karangahape Road & Upper Queen Street is #4 of 10 places to stay in Auckland. The best hotels in Karangahape Road & Upper Queen Street, ranked · Where to stay in Auckland

Axel's take: 7.8/10

A practical central hostel with a great kitchen, but uneven bathroom upkeep. A central budget hostel with dorms and private rooms, scored for what it is.

Haka House Auckland City is a budget hostel, not a five-star hotel, and it makes most sense as a practical base for exploring. Just off upper Queen Street, it offers dorms and private rooms, comfortable curtained bunks and a spacious communal kitchen. Expedia and Hostelworld guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff and cooking facilities. We'd shortlist it for a self-catering city break rather than a pampered stay.

The compromises are sleep comfort and shared-space upkeep. Reviews across sites mention stuffy rooms, variable sound insulation and bathrooms that sometimes need better cleaning or maintenance; recent guests also describe shower queues. Overall cleanliness feedback remains more positive than negative, but consistency is not its strongest suit. Light sleepers and anyone expecting dependable hotel-style comfort should look elsewhere. Parking and luggage storage cost extra.

Best for: Solo travelers on a budget; Self-catering city explorers; Travelers comfortable with hostel living
Watch out for: Stuffy rooms and variable noise; Shared-bathroom queues and uneven upkeep; Paid parking and luggage storage
Location: Just off upper Queen Street; convenient for central sights, with an uphill return from downtown.
Rooms: Dorms have curtained bunks; private rooms include shared-bathroom and ensuite options, but ventilation draws complaints.
Cleanliness: Generally positive ratings, tempered by recurring reports of bathrooms and rooms needing more attention.
Service: Helpful staff earn frequent praise, though a few recent guests report late-night check-in difficulties.
Amenities: Large communal kitchen, lounges, movie room, games tables, laundry, elevator and free Wi-Fi.
Fees and surprises: Parking and luggage storage are charged; reserve parking and confirm arrival arrangements in advance.
