Axel's take: 7.6/10

A practical downtown base, but room condition and noise keep expectations grounded. A simple, value-focused city-centre hotel with studios and suites, scored for what it is.

Edit Auckland Central, formerly the President Hotel, is a straightforward city-centre hotel rather than the polished four-star its listing might suggest. It's a good pick for travelers prioritizing location and value: Sky Tower, Queen Street, restaurants and a supermarket are close by. Recent Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, comfortable beds and spacious rooms; kitchenette-equipped options make longer stays easier.

The trade-off is consistency. Reviews describe both refreshed rooms and tired bathrooms, with occasional cleaning and maintenance shortcomings. Weekend nightlife can disturb sleep, and a September 2026 Expedia guest reported early-morning demolition noise behind the hotel—check whether that work continues before booking. Parking is limited, charged separately and accessed from Durham Lane. We'd skip it for a quiet retreat or dependable upscale finish, but consider it for a practical city break.

• Best for: Value-minded city explorers; Families wanting kitchenette-equipped rooms; Short stays near SkyCity

• Watch out for: Weekend nightlife and recently reported demolition noise; Uneven room condition and housekeeping; Limited paid parking via Durham Lane

• Location: Central and walkable for Sky Tower, Queen Street, dining and shopping.

• Rooms: Often spacious and comfortable, but updates and bathroom condition vary.

• Cleanliness: Recent feedback is mostly positive, with some significant exceptions.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff receive frequent praise; problem handling is less consistent.

• Amenities: The hotel lists a gym, guest laundry, free Wi-Fi and hot buffet breakfast; selected rooms have kitchenettes.

• Fees and surprises: Reserve paid parking ahead; confirm breakfast inclusions, housekeeping frequency and nearby demolition status.
