Axel's take: 8.2/10

A comfortable Plantage base with strong service, but choose your room carefully. a historic 4-star boutique hotel in Amsterdam’s quieter Plantage district, scored for what it is.

The Lancaster, now under Leonardo’s boutique brand, is a historic 4-star that makes sense if you prefer neighborhood calm to doorstep nightlife. Opposite ARTIS and close to a tram stop, it’s well placed without being in the busiest center. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise helpful staff, cleanliness and comfortable beds; recent Expedia reviews also welcome the refreshed interiors and breakfast. It’s a strong pick for a sightseeing break with somewhere calmer to return to.

Room choice is the catch. Small rooms really are compact, some limited-view accommodation has little daylight, and even family rooms can feel tight. The hotel also says housekeeping must be requested through its app. We’d choose a Superior room for breathing space and skip this if generous rooms or a location amid the central nightlife are priorities.

• Best for: couples on sightseeing breaks; travelers who prefer a quieter neighborhood; ARTIS and botanical-garden visitors

• Watch out for: compact small and family rooms; limited daylight in some rooms; housekeeping by request

• Location: Opposite ARTIS, with nearby trams connecting the quieter Plantage district to the center.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and refreshed decor earn praise; check room size and view before booking.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall feedback on Booking.com and Expedia; housekeeping is requested through the hotel app.

• Service: Helpful staff are a recurring strength, despite occasional reports of uneven check-in assistance.

• Amenities: Breakfast buffet, downstairs bar, small gym, free Wi-Fi and bike rental; lunch and dinner are neighborhood affairs.

• Fees and surprises: Budget for city tax, breakfast unless included, and paid public parking nearby.
