Axel's take: 8.8/10

Choose it for riverside grandeur and warm service, not flawless modern luxury. a historic five-star luxury hotel on the Amstel River, scored for what it is.

The Amstel is a historic five-star luxury hotel with a distinctly traditional personality: period furniture, formal public rooms and dining overlooking the river. It's a strong pick for travelers who want character rather than contemporary design. Expedia and Booking.com guests consistently praise cleanliness, comfortable beds and welcoming staff, while the river-level indoor pool gives it a genuine advantage for downtime between sightseeing.

The reservation is upkeep. Several 2026 Expedia guests mention aging fittings or plumbing problems, and Trip.com reviews also flag dated facilities, although praise still dominates. Helpful handling of problems is reassuring, but these shortcomings matter at this level. Confirm your room's view rather than assuming every room overlooks the water, and budget for paid parking. We'd skip it if freshly updated interiors and faultless bathroom fittings matter more than historic atmosphere.

• Best for: couples seeking traditional luxury; travelers who love historic hotels; city breaks with pool time

• Watch out for: aging fittings and occasional plumbing issues; river views depend on room category; paid valet parking

• Location: On the Amstel River, around four minutes' walk from Weesperplein station.

• Rooms: Traditional furnishings and well-liked beds; Classic rooms are listed at 25–34 square meters.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall: cleanliness scores are particularly positive on Expedia and Booking.com.

• Service: Warm, courteous staff earn repeated praise, including for responsive problem handling.

• Amenities: Heated indoor pool, sauna, steam room, gym, spa treatments and riverside dining.

• Fees and surprises: Valet parking costs extra; confirm breakfast inclusion and the exact room-view category.
