#8 of 8 hotels in Oud-West by Axel's take. Oud-West is #5 of 12 places to stay in Amsterdam. The best hotels in Oud-West, ranked · Where to stay in Amsterdam

Axel's take: 7.3/10

Inventive rooms and welcoming staff, but the design often beats the comfort. an art-themed budget hotel with hostel-style basics, scored for what it is.

Hotel Not Hotel is an art-themed budget hotel with hostel-style basics, rather than a conventional 3-star. Sleeping behind a bookcase or inside a tram gives it genuine character, and recent Expedia, Trip.com and Booking.com guest feedback repeatedly praises the welcoming staff. Its Amsterdam West neighborhood offers local cafés and handy tram connections. It's a good pick for easygoing travelers who want something different and pack light.

The compromise is everyday comfort: many rooms are tiny, bathrooms are often shared, and guests repeatedly describe heat and poor ventilation. Check the exact room, including whether a private shower also includes a toilet. Cleanliness generally earns praise, but housekeeping feedback varies. Guests report the Kevin Bacon restaurant/bar closed in 2026; breakfast reports also contradict the website, so confirm before booking. We'd skip it for spacious rooms, reliable cooling or full-service hotel comforts.

Best for: design-minded budget travelers; short stays with light luggage; easygoing solo travelers and couples
Watch out for: tiny rooms and shared bathrooms; heat and limited ventilation; uncertain breakfast and restaurant availability
Location: Amsterdam West neighborhood base near cafés and tram stops, rather than in the historic center.
Rooms: Individual art installations; several rooms measure just 5–9 square meters, and bathroom arrangements vary considerably.
Cleanliness: Recent guests often praise clean beds and bathrooms, with some reports of dust and inconsistent housekeeping.
Service: Friendly, helpful reception staff are the most consistent strength across recent guest feedback.
Amenities: Wi-Fi, communal seating and self-service snacks; guests report Kevin Bacon closed, while advertised breakfast availability needs confirmation.
Fees and surprises: Parking costs extra and spaces are limited; verify the exact room and bathroom configuration before paying.
