Axel's take: 7.7/10

Choose it for architectural character and generous rooms, not flawless five-star polish. a historic five-star hotel near Amsterdam Centraal, scored for what it is.

Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam is a historic five-star in the Scheepvaarthuis, and its strongest selling point is the building itself. We'd choose it for distinctive architecture, generously sized rooms and an easy walk from Amsterdam Centraal. Booking.com and Expedia guests broadly praise the location, cleanliness and welcoming staff; recent Expedia reviews also repeatedly appreciate the breakfast. It's a strong pick if traditional character matters more than contemporary styling.

The compromise is uneven five-star polish: guests on Expedia and Trip.com describe dated furnishings, with some reporting maintenance or service hiccups. More importantly, the hotel's current notice says the swimming pool and steam cabin are out of service; saunas and the gym remain available. We'd skip it for a spa-led break, or if you expect consistently immaculate finishes and seamless luxury service.

• Best for: architecture and history enthusiasts; city breaks arriving by train; travelers who prefer spacious, traditional rooms

• Watch out for: swimming pool and steam cabin currently closed; dated furnishings and uneven maintenance; occasional service delays

• Location: Around an eight-minute walk from Centraal, with Nieuwmarkt and central sights within walking distance.

• Rooms: Often praised for space and high ceilings; traditional furnishings can feel tired rather than luxurious.

• Cleanliness: Generally a strength across Booking.com ratings and recent Expedia guest feedback.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff earn frequent praise, although some guests describe slow or inconsistent handling.

• Amenities: Restaurant, bar, saunas and gym; the official website currently flags the pool and steam cabin as unavailable.

• Fees and surprises: Paid, limited parking; breakfast inclusion depends on your booking, and Booking.com flags a nightly security deposit.
