Axel's take on Comstock Park: #3 of 5 in Grand Rapids, 4.1/10
A strong baseball-and-bikes base, but not a replacement for downtown. Comstock Park combines distinctive baseball-and-trail character with the strongest value, but fewer hotel choices and weak transport access keep it third.
Comstock Park makes more sense as a small-town baseball-and-trails stay than as a substitute for downtown. West River Drive has local places to eat and drink, LMCU Ballpark draws Whitecaps fans, and the White Pine Trail links the ballpark with the village streets. Dwight Lydell Park's 2025 improvements added a boardwalk and creekside overlooks.
For families bringing bikes, or anyone planning a ballgame, that is a stronger reason to stay than generic highway convenience. But trail access is not comprehensive walkability: freeway ramps and busy crossings still shape the approaches. Downtown sightseeing needs separate transport, and convenient local bus access is lacking.
- Best for: families, a quiet stay, sports fans
- Skip it if: You need straightforward public transport from your doorstep; You want downtown nightlife within walking distance
- Getting around: The White Pine Trail connects the local dining streets and ballpark; Route 9 runs farther west on Alpine, not along West River Drive, so use a car or rideshare for downtown and GRR.
- After dark: Ballgames bring crowds and traffic; otherwise, expect a small local-bar scene rather than downtown's range of evening venues.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $119 a night

Where to look in Comstock Park
- West River Drive by LMCU Ballpark. Make baseball the anchor here; game-day arrivals bring traffic, while the trail offers another way toward the village. Hotels here: Tru By Hilton Comstock Park Grand Rapids, Comfort Suites Grand Rapids North.
- Dwight Lydell Park edge. Look toward the village for park time and White Pine Trail outings rather than treating the freeway approach as downtown.
How to choose
- Choose Tru By Hilton Comstock Park Grand Rapids if cleanliness and friendly service matter more than room size; you're making a short, car-based stay.
- Choose Comfort Suites Grand Rapids North if you need a sofa-bed suite, microwave and refrigerator for less; accept maintenance inconsistencies and a services fee.
What paying more buys
Tru costs more than Comfort Suites but buys stronger cleanliness feedback and a simpler, modern room—not extra space. Comfort Suites is cheaper and gives families larger suites with sofa beds. Tru's premium is less compelling if spreading out matters most, though Comfort's maintenance and pool issues deserve attention. Typical rates with Axel here run from $109 a night at Comfort Suites Grand Rapids North to $129 at Tru By Hilton Comstock Park Grand Rapids (last 30 days).
