The best hotels in Old Town Scottsdale, Phoenix, ranked

Axel's take on Old Town Scottsdale: #2 of 6 in Phoenix, 6.7/10

The easiest leisure base for galleries, shopping and nights out on foot. Old Town leads for things on your doorstep and pairs strong character with reasonable value, but limited cross-Valley access keeps it second.

Old Town makes a leisure weekend easy: Main Street and Marshall Way galleries, the Civic Center museums, canal-side restaurants and Fashion Square belong to one walkable district. It feels more geared to browsing and going out than downtown Phoenix. Choose the arts streets for a gentler atmosphere or the Entertainment District when nightlife is the point.

Those are meaningfully different stays. The northeastern club district brings late music and party crowds; quieter gallery blocks are not the same experience. There is no light rail, so Phoenix museums, games and conventions become separate journeys. Stay here for a Scottsdale-led trip; skip it if you expect effortless public transport across the Valley.

• Best for: couples, nightlife, food lovers, shopping
• Skip it if: You need easy rail access to Phoenix; You want quiet beside the Entertainment District
• Getting around: Walk the arts streets, waterfront and shopping district; Route 72 serves Scottsdale Road and Route 50 serves Camelback Road, but there is no rail. A car or taxi is the straightforward option from PHX or AZA.
• After dark: The Entertainment District is loud and busy late; Main Street and the arts streets offer a calmer alternative to the club blocks.
• Rates: Typical Axel rate $210 a night · usually 7% under the public rate
