A practical sightseeing base, but location beats room comfort. A basic 3-star city hotel just off La Rambla, scored for what it is.

Hotel Moderno Barcelona is a basic 3-star just off La Rambla, best treated as somewhere to sleep between sightseeing days. We'd consider it for the easy access to Liceu metro, La Boqueria and the Gothic Quarter, rather than for the hotel itself. Tripadvisor, Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise helpful reception staff, and cleanliness is generally rated better than the property's condition.

The trade-off is uneven room comfort: recurring reports describe tired fittings, noise between rooms and variable ventilation. Some rooms face internal walls, so confirm the outlook before booking if daylight matters. Breakfast earns mixed reactions, though the hotel includes it with direct website bookings. La Rambla's ongoing reconstruction also brings nearby disruption. It's a reasonable pick for location-first travelers; we'd skip it for a quiet retreat or consistently fresh rooms.

• Best for: Location-first city breaks; Sightseers using public transport; Travelers comfortable with basic rooms

• Watch out for: Noise between rooms; Some rooms face internal walls; Ongoing La Rambla construction

• Location: Steps from La Rambla and Liceu metro, with La Boqueria and the Gothic Quarter close by.

• Rooms: Basic and unevenly maintained; check the room outlook, with recurring noise and ventilation complaints.

• Cleanliness: Generally satisfactory across ratings and recent reviews, though housekeeping lapses do occur.

• Service: Friendly, helpful reception staff are a consistent strength; problem handling gets more mixed feedback.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, 24-hour reception, luggage storage, elevator and buffet breakfast; no onsite parking.

• Fees and surprises: City tax is collected at the property; breakfast inclusion depends on booking terms, and late checkout costs extra.
