Norse Atlantic Airways rating
Low fares must justify severe complaint and refund problems
Axel recommends Norse Atlantic Airways only when the total price is clearly lower and travel plans are firm. Direct-booked Economy Light includes a cabin bag, and no fee-display findings were identified in 5 years. But exceptionally high complaint rates, documented payment problems and unconfirmed price-drop recovery make a small saving poor compensation for the risk.
- Best
- Norse announced a free 10 kg cabin bag for direct-booked Economy Light tickets.
- No fee-display findings were identified in 5 years.
- Worst
- DOT recorded 224.71 complaints per 100,000 passengers on US routes in April and May 2026.
- Recovery of a later price drop outside the qualifying 24-hour window is not confirmed.
If the fare drops after you book, can you get money back?
PartlyRepriceability 4.8/10
Partly, through the qualifying US-route cancellation window. Norse promises a refund for flights to or from the US cancelled within 24 hours of purchase when booked at least one week before travel, allowing cancellation and rebooking at a lower price. Economy Light and Economy Classic changes require a fee plus any applicable fare difference, but the fee amount is unconfirmed. The brochure lists no change fee for Economy Flextra, with fare difference payable. Outside the window, same-flight repricing, cancellation rights and whether a lower difference is refunded, credited or lost are unconfirmed. Direct-website Economy Flextra cancellations produce travel credit under the brochure, but current deductions, expiry and who may use it are unconfirmed. Credits replacing a legally owed US disruption refund must last at least five years.
Axel has no confirmed sample size or observation period to report for Norse, so no recovery rate is available. Repricing is Axel's price-drop protection: Axel watches your booked fare and works to deliver further savings when it falls. Repricing is included with Axel Membership.

- Fare difference on a cheaper change
- Not confirmed. Article 3.3.2 of the accessible conditions requires payment of the difference when a replacement fare is higher, but does not establish what happens when it is lower. A cash refund, credit or forfeiture of the difference could not be verified for Economy Classic.
- Same flight, lower price
- No accessible permitted source confirmed a fee-free adjustment or credit when the exact booked flight becomes cheaper. Cancelling and buying again within the qualifying 24-hour refund window is a verified route to a lower price; eligibility outside that window remains unconfirmed.
- Credits (travel credit)
- The current validity of voluntary Flextra cancellation credits could not be verified. Separately, credits offered instead of a legally owed US-flight cancellation or significant-change refund must be valid for at least five years under DOT rules.
- 24-hour rule
- Norse's US Customer Service Plan promises a refund for flights to or from the United States cancelled within 24 hours of purchase, provided the booking was made at least one week before travel. A broader current policy was not verified.
- Same-day change
- A separate same-day confirmed-change or standby program, its fee, and any departure-day change deadline could not be verified. Ordinary change permission should not be treated as confirmation of a special same-day benefit.
- Schedule changes
- For US international itineraries, DOT requires a refund if the airline cancels, moves departure at least six hours earlier, moves arrival at least six hours later, changes the origin or destination airport, adds connections, or involuntarily downgrades the cabin, and the traveler declines travel and alternative compensation. Additional accessibility-related changes also qualify. Refunds must return to the original payment method. Norse's accessible February 2023 conditions offer alternative flights or refunds for significant changes without defining a numerical threshold; their 14-day acceptance language must not override current DOT refund rights.

Refunds and disruptions
US DOT refund rules, EU261 and UK261 apply according to itinerary and operating airline. For covered US cancellations or significant changes, declining travel and alternative compensation entitles you to an automatic original-payment refund. European and UK law can require meals, hotels, rerouting and compensation. Norse’s conditions offer rebooking, free rerouting on an airline it selects, or refund.
DOT recorded 118.56 refund complaints per 100,000 passengers on US routes in April and May 2026. Reports describe delayed refunds and compensation. France’s DGAC fined NORSE €22,000 on July 18, 2025, for passenger-rights failures, without distinguishing N0 from Z0. In October 2026, the Civil Aviation Authority of Norway ordered overdue compensation paid and controls improved, with conditional NOK 8,000 daily payments for missed October 31 and November 30 deadlines, excluding Sundays, not a fine already incurred.
Regulator actions since October 2021
- October 2026, Civil Aviation Authority of Norway: A decision reported on October 25 found continuing failures to protect passenger rights, including approved compensation left unpaid and inadequate records. Norse was ordered to pay completed claims by October 31 and establish satisfactory procedures and controls by November 30. Each missed deadline triggers NOK 8,000 per day, excluding Sundays. These are conditional coercive payments, not a fixed fine already incurred as of October 26. Norse said about half of the 591 payments cited had been made and targeted October 30 for the remainder. Source
- July 2025, France DGAC: Decision 236 imposed €22,000 in fines: €2,000 for failures to compensate passengers denied boarding, €12,000 for failures to provide care following denied boarding or cancellation, and €8,000 for failures to inform passengers of their rights. The regulator identifies the carrier as NORSE without distinguishing N0 from Z0. A decision-date USD conversion was not verified. Source
Reliability
No verified airline-wide annual or rolling-year on-time arrival or cancellation rate was found as of October 26, 2026. Cirium’s On-Time Performance Review 2025 and OAG’s September 2026 rankings were checked. Separately, Norse reported 70% of own-network flights departing within 15 minutes and 99% scheduled-flight completion for September 2026. These are airline-reported monthly figures, not annual arrival statistics, and do not establish year-round reliability.
Fees
For direct-booked Economy Light, Norse announced a free 10 kg cabin bag. The brochure lists no checked bag for Economy Light and a 23 kg bag for Economy Classic and Economy Flextra, but current checked-bag terms and fees were not confirmed. Seat selection costs extra, while random assignment at check-in is free. Free adjacent family seating is not confirmed.
No fee-display findings were identified in 5 years. Whether every mandatory charge is included in the first displayed price was not confirmed, while optional paid seats and checked baggage can increase the total.
Complaints
DOT recorded 224.71 complaints per 100,000 passengers on flights to and from the US in April and May 2026, against a 14.73 median for airlines based abroad. That is a serious warning about service and dispute handling. Baggage and wheelchair mishandling figures were not reported to DOT for April, May, July and August 2026. Bumping figures were not reported for April to June 2026. Missing figures do not mean no incidents.
Loyalty program
No current Norse loyalty program with published terms was verified. Points expiry and award pricing are therefore not confirmed, and cuts over the last two years cannot be assessed. An older launch-era report said there was no loyalty program, but that does not establish the position in October 2026. Axel would not factor mileage rewards into this fare comparison.
Choose Norse Atlantic Airways if
- Travel with only the included cabin bag on a direct-booked Economy Light ticket.
- You have firm plans and find a clearly lower total fare after adding extras.
Book elsewhere if
- You need a confirmed way to recover later fare drops.
- You want a verified guarantee that children sit beside a parent for free.
- You place a high value on prompt refund and compensation handling.
Tips
- Book Economy Light directly if its announced 10 kg cabin allowance covers your needs, and verify the allowance before paying.
- Decline paid seat selection and accept free random assignment at check-in if sitting together is not essential.
- For an eligible US-route booking, use the 24-hour refund window to cancel and rebook if the fare falls.
Questions travelers ask
Does Norse charge change fees?
Economy Light and Economy Classic charge a change fee plus any applicable fare difference. The current fee amount is not confirmed. The airline-produced brochure lists no change fee for Economy Flextra, although a higher fare still costs extra. Current deadlines and rules for transferring paid extras were not verified. A separate same-day change or standby benefit was not confirmed.
Can I get money back if the fare drops after booking?
The qualifying US-route cancellation window provides a confirmed route to the lower price. For flights to or from the US booked at least one week before travel, cancel within 24 hours for a refund and book again. Outside that window, a same-flight adjustment and the treatment of any lower fare difference are not confirmed.
How long does Norse travel credit last?
The expiry of voluntary Economy Flextra travel credit is not confirmed. Its transferability, redemption fees and rules for unused balances are also unconfirmed. Separately, under DOT rules, credit accepted instead of a legally owed refund for a US-flight cancellation or significant change must remain valid for at least five years. That minimum does not establish the expiry of ordinary cancellation credit.
What do I get if Norse cancels my flight?
You may be entitled to a refund or rerouting, depending on the itinerary and applicable law. For covered US flights, declining travel and alternative compensation after cancellation entitles you to an automatic refund to the original payment method. Norse’s conditions also offer rebooking or free rerouting with Norse or an airline it selects. EU261 or UK261 may additionally require care and compensation.
How much do carry-on and checked bags cost?
Direct-booked Economy Light includes a 10 kg cabin bag under Norse’s announcement. It does not include a checked bag in the brochure, and current checked-bag prices and airport charges are not confirmed. The brochure lists a 23 kg checked bag for Economy Classic and Economy Flextra, but current detailed baggage terms were not verified.

How Axel rates airlines
Scores follow Axel's published rubric: six pillars, each scored 0 to 10 by fixed checks, with repriceability weighted 35%. Facts were checked October 26, 2026. No data at all for Reliability and Loyalty fairness, so they take the median of all rated airlines. No data for 5 checks (Lower fare on the same flight, Cancel the standard fare, Same-day change, First checked bag, Children seated with a parent), each scored at the median of all rated airlines.
