Good baggage value, weakened by late arrivals and high complaints

Axel sees Ethiopian Airlines as a conditional value choice: included bags and standard seats keep the lowest fare useful, but weak punctuality and high complaint rates make it harder to recommend. Book when the total price is clearly better, not because you expect easy refunds of later fare drops or consistently timely arrivals.

  • Best
  • Economy Promo includes two checked bags up to 23 kg each on US routes.
  • Standard economy seat selection is free at any time.
  • OAG reported just 0.04% of flights cancelled in September 2026.
  • Worst
  • Only 62.23% of flights arrived on time in September 2026.
  • US route complaints reached 37.97 per 100,000 passengers in April and May 2026.
  • The US Booking FAQ rejects retroactive refunds of later fare decreases.

If the fare drops after you book, can you get money back?

PartlyRepriceability 4.8/10

Partly, by cancelling and rebooking, not by requesting a refund of a later fare decrease. Economy Promo and Economy Semi Flex have ticket-specific change and refund rules, with no uniform US change fee confirmed. Economy Flex does not guarantee free changes or penalty-free refunds. After the risk-free window, refund eligibility and cancellation charges determine whether rebooking saves money. Eligible refunds normally return to the original payment method. The treatment of any difference on a cheaper exchange, general credit expiry and voucher transferability are not confirmed. Ordinary ticket validity is generally one year, not a voucher expiry rule. DOT requires credits offered instead of a required disruption refund to last at least five years.

For direct bookings made at least seven days before departure, the contract promises a full refund for cancellation within 24 hours for travel to or from the US, though the FAQ describes US departures only. Requests go through the contact center or a ticket office. Axel has no confirmed repricing results, sample size or observation period to report for this airline.

Fare difference on a cheaper change
Not confirmed. The Conditions of Carriage say voluntary rerouting, including a fare change, can result in a refund or additional collection. They do not establish the treatment of Economy Semi Flex residual value after a cheaper exchange.
Same flight, lower price
The airline's US Booking FAQ rejects retroactive ticket repricing and refunds of later fare decreases, but expressly identifies cancellation and rebooking as the alternative. Accordingly, cancel_and_rebook_only is more accurate than not_offered. Qualifying bookings can be cancelled for a full refund within 24 hours and rebooked at the lower fare; afterward, cancellation and rebooking may incur fare-dependent fees and require refund eligibility. No routine fee-free price-drop credit, minimum claim amount or dedicated adjustment process was confirmed. The FAQ displays no publication or update date; it was checked on October 26, 2026.
Credits (Travel voucher or credit; no current general-purpose program confirmed)
No general credit expiry was confirmed. Ordinary tickets generally last one year from travel commencement or, if unused, the original or reissue date, whichever is later; fare exceptions apply. This is not voucher validity. DOT requires credits offered instead of a required disruption refund to last at least five years.
24-hour rule
For direct purchases at least seven days before departure, the Conditions of Carriage promise a full refund for cancellation within 24 hours on travel to/from the US and also describe a free 24-hour hold. The FAQ and US booking page restrict cancellation wording to US departures. All are undated; the broader contract wording is reported. The booking page directs requests to the global contact center or a ticket office.
Same-day change
No separate US-route same-day confirmed-change or standby policy was confirmed. Ordinary changes depend on ticket rules, availability, penalties and fare differences. If already checked in, contact customer care to cancel check-in before changing.
Schedule changes
For international itineraries to/from the US, DOT requires a refund for cancellation or qualifying significant changes when the traveler declines the changed flight, replacement transportation and credit or other compensation. Qualifying changes include departure at least six hours earlier, final arrival at least six hours later, different origin/destination airports, additional connections, involuntary cabin downgrade and specified accessibility-related changes. Refunds are automatic to the original payment method, generally within seven business days for credit cards or 20 calendar days for other payments. Ethiopian promises its next available flight after cancellations or missed connections attributable to it. No more generous airline-specific time threshold was confirmed.

Refunds and disruptions

US DOT rules cover US services. EU261 and UK261 generally cover departures from those jurisdictions, and Canada's APPR covers Canadian services. Nigeria also has passenger protections. Covered US cancellations or significant changes require automatic refunds if alternatives are declined. Ethiopian promises its next available flight for disruptions attributable to it, plus hotels and transfers for qualifying missed connections between Ethiopian flights.

Ethiopian promises card refunds within seven business days and other refunds within ten business days after complete requests. Routine airline-wide delays were not established through October 2026. The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority sanctioned Ethiopian on December 24, 2024, including delayed refund cases, with no Ethiopian-specific fine disclosed. Full resolution was not confirmed by February 28, 2025. On June 23, 2023, the Canadian Transportation Agency found a tariff breach over refused carriage. Reported reimbursement was CAD 355.63, not a fine.

Regulator actions since October 2021

  • December 2024, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority: The NCAA sanctioned Ethiopian and four other airlines under Part 19 passenger-protection regulations. The announced group of violations included overdue refunds, failure to answer regulatory communications, baggage problems and disruption handling; the reporting did not allocate every violation or disclose an Ethiopian-specific monetary penalty. Ethiopian sought further engagement and said some cases had been resolved. Source
  • June 2023, Canadian Transportation Agency: In Decision 106-C-A-2023, the Agency found that Ethiopian incorrectly applied its tariff when it refused carriage to a passenger with a valid Canadian electronic travel authorization. A CanLII-hosted legal report records CAD 355.63 in reimbursement for accommodation, taxi and refreshments, not a civil fine; a historical USD conversion was not verified. The regulator's decision index was located, but the full decision could not be read directly. Source

Reliability

OAG's September 2026 rankings put Ethiopian Airlines at 62.23% on time across 14,823 flights, with 0.04% cancelled. That is a weak punctuality result alongside an excellent cancellation rate. The low cancellation rate does not make this a dependable choice for tight connections. Ethiopian-specific annual percentages were not confirmed in the Cirium On-Time Performance Review 2025.

Fees

Economy Promo includes a 7 kg carry-on measuring up to 55 × 40 × 23 cm, plus permitted personal accessories. On US routes, it also includes two checked bags up to 23 kg and 158 cm total dimensions each. Standard seat selection is free at any time. Preferred, bulkhead and extra-legroom seats cost extra.

An explicit guarantee of free adjacent seating for every child aged 13 or under was not confirmed, so select standard seats together early. Children are not automatically exempt from preferred-seat charges. No fee display findings were identified in five years, but optional bags and seats can increase the first quoted price.

Complaints

DOT recorded 37.97 complaints per 100,000 passengers on Ethiopian flights to and from the US in April and May 2026, versus 14.73 for the median airline based abroad. Refund complaints were 4.75 per 100,000 passengers, versus 4.39. Axel considers that a poor complaint record. Mishandled bag and wheelchair figures were not reported to DOT for April, May, July and August 2026. Bumping figures were not reported for April to June 2026.

Loyalty program

ShebaMiles earned miles generally expire after three years, with removal on December 31. Eligible earning in the expiry year adds one calendar year, but award flights and redeposits do not. Purchased, gifted and transferred miles have different birth month expiry wording, so check the account's dates. Award pricing was not confirmed. No devaluations were identified in the last 24 months.

Choose Ethiopian Airlines if

  • Travel with two checked bags on US routes.
  • Value included standard seats more than flexible ticket rules.
  • You can tolerate delays when the total fare is lower.

Book elsewhere if

  • Need dependable arrival times for a tight connection.
  • Expect automatic credit when the same flight becomes cheaper.
  • Want a confirmed free adjacent-seat guarantee for children.

Tips

  • Compare Economy Promo and Economy Semi Flex using the ticket's actual change and refund rules, not the fare name alone.
  • Keep each included US-route checked bag at 23 kg or less to avoid the $100 charge for bags over 23 kg and under 32 kg.
  • Choose a free standard seat rather than a preferred, bulkhead or extra-legroom seat.

Questions travelers ask

Does Ethiopian Airlines charge change fees?

Change fees depend on the ticket, and no uniform current US-route fee was confirmed. Economy Promo and Economy Semi Flex have ticket-specific rules. Economy Flex may allow free date changes, but a universal waiver was not confirmed. Availability and fare differences also matter, and a separate same-day confirmed-change or standby policy was not confirmed.

Can I get money back if the price drops after booking?

Not through a retroactive fare adjustment. Ethiopian's US Booking FAQ says to cancel and rebook instead. Direct purchases made at least seven days before departure qualify for full refunds when cancelled within 24 hours under the contract's rule for travel to or from the US, though the FAQ mentions US departures only. After that window, refund eligibility and cancellation charges depend on your ticket, so a lower fare may not produce a saving.

How long do Ethiopian Airlines credits last?

General travel credit expiry and transferability were not confirmed. Ordinary tickets generally last one year from travel commencement, or for unused tickets from the original or reissue date, whichever is later, subject to fare exceptions. That is ticket validity, not voucher validity. DOT requires credits offered instead of a required disruption refund to last at least five years.

What do I get if Ethiopian Airlines cancels my flight?

For covered US itineraries, you are owed an automatic refund if you decline the replacement flight and other alternatives. DOT generally requires repayment to the original payment method within seven business days for cards or 20 calendar days for other payments. Ethiopian also promises its next available flight after cancellations attributable to it. Hotel accommodation and transfers apply to qualifying missed connections between Ethiopian flights, but a general meals promise was not confirmed.

How much do carry-on and checked bags cost?

Economy Promo includes a 7 kg carry-on and, on US routes, two checked bags up to 23 kg each, so there is no charge within those allowances. Each additional 23 kg bag costs $225 each way between Washington, Chicago, Newark or JFK and Addis Ababa or beyond, or $275 to Asmara. An included bag over 23 kg and under 32 kg costs $100. Oversize cabin bags may require checking and additional charges.

  • Carry-on in the lowest fare: 10.0/10 (Economy includes one carry-on up to 7 kg and 55 × 40 × 23 cm, plus permitted personal accessories. Oversize or overweight cabin bags may require checking and additional charges; no single charge was confirmed.)
  • First checked bag: 10.0/10 (US-route economy includes two checked bags up to 23 kg and 158 cm total dimensions each. The US optional-charges page lists each additional 23 kg bag at USD 225 each way between Washington, Chicago, Newark or JFK and Addis Ababa/beyond, or USD 275 to Asmara. An included economy bag over 23 kg and under 32 kg costs USD 100. These are published charges, not verified advance-online discounts.)
  • Seat in the lowest fare: 10.0/10 (free_any_time)
  • Children seated with a parent: no data, median 5.0/10 used (The airline's Preferred Seat FAQ explicitly says standard economy-seat selection is free; preferred, bulkhead and extra-legroom seats cost extra. Its seat terms name Promo, Semi-Flex and Flex and distinguish free from paid seat types. Neither source displays an update date; both were checked on October 26, 2026. Ethiopian makes efforts to seat passengers together subject to availability, but no explicit free adjacent-seat guarantee for every child aged 13 or under on every fare was confirmed. Children and infants are not automatically exempt from preferred-seat charges. Paid seats generally are not refunded after voluntary changes or cancellation.)

  • Miles expiry: 2.0/10 (General program terms give earned miles three years and remove expired miles on December 31. Eligible earning activity during the expiry year extends the affected miles for one additional calendar year; award flights and redeposits do not qualify. Separate purchased/gifted/transferred-mile terms describe expiry at the end of the member's birth month in the third year. Travelers should check their account's specific expiry dates because these provisions differ.)
