Included bags and useful flexibility, held back by complaints
Axel considers Emirates good value when you need included baggage and can accept fare-specific refund rules. Low cancellations and useful date-change waivers support the case, but recovering a later fare drop can require cancellation and rebooking. High complaint rates and restrictive Skywards expiry make it a weaker choice for travelers who prioritize easy problem resolution or long-term rewards.

If the fare drops after you book, can you get money back?
PartlyRepriceability 7.0/10
Partly. Emirates has no confirmed fee-free adjustment for a later drop on the same flight. Approved changes to a lower fare return the difference less administration fees, initially as a refundable credit note for eligible online changes. It lasts one year from the change date and can fund Emirates travel or be cashed out through the refund form. Transferability is unconfirmed. Economy Special is nonrefundable. Refundable fares can be canceled and rebooked: Dubai-destination Saver and Flex tickets issued from August 10, 2026 have refund fees of $50 and $25 respectively, with separate no-show charges. Unused Flex Plus has no cancellation fee and refunds the original payment method. Special gets one free date change for bookings from April 2, 2026. Saver and Flex change fees depend on applicable waivers and ticket rules. Fare increases remain payable. For itineraries with a US flight booked more than seven days before departure, cancellation is penalty-free within 24 hours of booking through the refund form.
Axel has no confirmed repricing result with a sample size and observation period to report.

- Fare difference on a cheaper change
- Back to the original payment. Article 3.4.4 of Emirates' US Conditions of Carriage says an approved change producing a lower revised price receives the difference back, less applicable administration fees. For eligible online-change refunds, Emirates initially emails a credit note that can itself be refunded. This does not establish unrestricted access to every cheaper booking class or automatic repricing of an unchanged flight.
- Same flight, lower price
- No ongoing, fee-free adjustment procedure for a later price drop on the exact booked flight was confirmed. The Best Price Guarantee instead covers an identical third-party fare existing when booking, at least USD 20 cheaper per person, claimed by midnight that day. Refundable tickets can be canceled and rebooked under their cancellation rules, but this is not a confirmed same-flight repricing service.
- Credits (credit note (EMD))
- A credit note arising from an eligible online-change refund is valid for one year from issuance, which is the date the booking is changed.
- 24-hour rule
- Emirates permits penalty-free cancellation within 24 hours of booking when the itinerary includes a US flight and booking occurs more than seven days before the first departure. Request through the refund form; the clock starts at booking, not ticket issuance. DOT states its minimum rule applies at least seven days before departure. Separately, eligible Economy bookings offer a free 24-hour Hold My Fare.
- Same-day change
- No distinct published same-day confirmed-change or standby program, flat fee, or standard-fare entitlement was confirmed. Ordinary changes remain subject to availability and ticket rules; a date-change waiver does not establish a same-day benefit.
- Schedule changes
- On US international itineraries, cancellation or a significant change entitles travelers declining the changed flight, rebooking and other compensation to a refund. Significant changes include departure at least six hours earlier, arrival at least six hours later, different origin or destination airports, more connections, or a cabin downgrade; additional accessibility protections apply. Emirates can offer alternative transportation, but eligible travelers may reject it for an original-payment refund. Emirates states seven business days for credit-card refunds and 20 calendar days for other payment methods.

- Miles expiry: 2.0/10 · Under current rules, miles have a three-year validity period and expire at the end of the member's birthday month following that period; earning or redeeming does not generally reset that fixed expiry. - Devaluations: 2.0/10 · 2025-05: First Class Classic Rewards were restricted to Skywards Silver, Gold and Platinum members, excluding ordinary Blue members. Current official rules also exclude passengers aged eight or younger from these First Class redemptions. This is a restriction on redemption access, not a change to elite-status qualification.; 2026-05: Emirates announced Classic Reward and Upgrade Reward pricing changes through its Miles Calculator shortly before implementation. One Mile at a Time documented increases of roughly 15% in examples, including New York–Dubai First Class rising from 163,500 to 188,000 miles one way. The changes were mixed: some newly available one-way Business Class Saver awards became cheaper.

Refunds and disruptions
On US itineraries, DOT rules require an original-payment refund for a qualifying cancellation or significant change if you reject alternatives. EU261 and UK261 generally cover Emirates departures from the EU and UK, not all inbound flights. Canadian, Brazilian, Turkish and Indian protections depend on itinerary. Emirates promises next-flight rebooking efforts in the same cabin, refreshments and available overnight accommodation under its US plan. It states seven business days for card refunds and 20 calendar days for other payments.
No refund or compensation findings were identified in five years, but DOT recorded 20.44 refund complaints per 100,000 passengers on US routes in April 2026, versus a 4.39 foreign-airline median. Separately, Italy’s Garante per la protezione dei dati personali fined Emirates EUR 180,000 on May 14, 2026 over medical-data handling, not refunds.
Regulator actions since October 2021
- May 2026, Italy Garante per la protezione dei dati personali: The Italian data-protection authority imposed a EUR 180,000 fine concerning medical information collected from passengers requiring assistance. It found inadequate privacy information and excessive seven-year retention, and ordered corrective measures. The decision did not find that collecting the medical information was itself unlawful or that Emirates intentionally discriminated against the complainant. A decision-date USD conversion was not verified. Source
Reliability
OAG's September 2026 monthly rankings report 75% of Emirates flights arriving on time and 0.15% canceled for September 1 to 30, 2026. The cancellation rate is published directly, not inferred from a completion factor. Axel sees low cancellations as a strength, but punctuality is less convincing. These are monthly figures, not an annual record, and a full-year 2025 figure was not confirmed.
Fees
Economy Special includes a 7 kg cabin bag and one checked bag up to 23 kg on ordinary US itineraries. Advance regular-seat selection costs about $7 to $40 per passenger per sector. Regular, preferred and twin selection becomes free when online check-in opens 48 hours before departure, subject to availability. Children under 13 are guaranteed a seat beside an accompanying adult, but the whole family is not guaranteed seats together. No fee-display findings were identified in five years, although whether mandatory charges are added after the first displayed price was not confirmed. Seat selection and excess baggage can increase the total.
Complaints
DOT's April 2026 data for flights to and from the US shows 36.24 complaints per 100,000 passengers, against a 14.73 median for airlines based abroad. That is a clear weakness. Emirates bag, wheelchair and scooter handling figures were not reported in DOT's April, May, July and August 2026 reports. Bumping figures were not reported for April to June 2026.
Loyalty program
Emirates Skywards has a published award chart, but fixed expiry and recent restrictions weaken its value. Miles generally expire after three years at the end of the member's birthday month, without an activity reset. In May 2025, Emirates restricted First Class Classic Rewards to Silver, Gold and Platinum members. In May 2026, One Mile at a Time documented roughly 15% increases in examples, though some Business Class Saver awards became cheaper.
Choose Emirates if
- You need included checked baggage on ordinary US itineraries.
- Book Dubai-destination Saver tickets covered by the unlimited free date-change policy.
- You value included bags more than advance seat selection.
Book elsewhere if
- You need a confirmed fee-free refund whenever your booked flight gets cheaper.
- You want voluntary cancellation refunds on Economy Special.
- You need account activity to extend the life of your miles.
Tips
- Wait until online check-in opens 48 hours before departure for free regular, preferred or twin seat selection, subject to availability.
- Compare Saver by route, because it includes two checked bags between the US and Dubai but only one between the US and Europe.
- For eligible US itineraries, request cancellation through the refund form within 24 hours of booking, provided you booked more than seven days before departure.
Questions travelers ask
Does Emirates charge change fees?
Not always. Economy Special bookings from April 2, 2026 include one complimentary date change. Saver and Flex tickets to Dubai issued from August 10, 2026 receive unlimited free date changes under the current waiver. Other new bookings get one complimentary change, with later fees governed by the ticket. Flex Plus has no date-change fee. Fare increases remain payable, and no separate same-day confirmed-change or standby entitlement was confirmed.
Can I get money back if my Emirates fare drops?
Partly, but no ongoing fee-free adjustment on the same booked flight was confirmed. An approved change producing a lower price can return the difference less administration fees. Eligible online changes initially produce a refundable credit note. Alternatively, refundable tickets can be canceled and rebooked while the cheaper fare remains available, subject to the ticket's cancellation penalty. Economy Special does not promise a voluntary cancellation credit.
How long do Emirates credits last?
An eligible online-change credit note lasts one year from issuance, which is the date you change the booking. Contact an Emirates office to use it for future Emirates travel, or submit the refund form to cash it out. Transferability and redemption fees for ordinary residual credits were not confirmed. A separate US-contract force-majeure credit allows the original passenger or another person to travel within 12 months, with evidence required.
What do I get if Emirates cancels my flight?
On US itineraries, you can reject alternative arrangements and receive an original-payment refund after a qualifying cancellation or significant change. Emirates states seven business days for card refunds and 20 calendar days for other payment methods. Its US plan also promises efforts to rebook you on the next Emirates flight in the same cabin, refreshments and available hotel accommodation when a necessary overnight stay is away from home or your destination. Additional legal rights depend on the itinerary.
How much are carry-on and checked bags on Emirates?
Economy Special includes a 7 kg cabin bag and one checked bag up to 23 kg on ordinary US itineraries. For tickets issued from September 8, 2026, published airport charges per additional piece include $225 between the Americas and Middle East and $200 between the Americas and Europe. Advance-purchase discounts vary, and no universal online price was confirmed. Saver includes different checked allowances depending on the route.

Loyalty fairness: 3.6/10
- Miles expiry: 2.0/10 (Under current rules, miles have a three-year validity period and expire at the end of the member's birthday month following that period; earning or redeeming does not generally reset that fixed expiry. - Devaluations: 2.0/10 (2025-05: First Class Classic Rewards were restricted to Skywards Silver, Gold and Platinum members, excluding ordinary Blue members. One Mile at a Time documented increases of roughly 15% in examples, including New York–Dubai First Class rising from 163,500 to 188,000 miles one way. The changes were mixed: some newly available one-way Business Class Saver awards became cheaper.)
